13 new fake tans that’ll make you want to replace your go-to
Pros and novices alike are going to froth over these newbies

If you’re a regular fake tanner, you’ll likely have your tried and trusted go-to. The one that gets you through any situation that requires your skin to look a few shades darker.
And we love your loyalty, we really do. But here’s the thing. Sunless tanning is only getting better. The demand is increasing (well done to all of you smarty pantses for staying out of the sun!), which means new technologies are emerging that deliver faster results, easier application and more choice for your end result (like who knew that all we wanted this whole time was a luminous bronze tan and not just a regular bronze tan?).
The world is literally your oyster when it comes to self-tanning, so grab your credit card and give a new formula a chance. Because these new tanning launches are good (and may we just point out how many Australian brands are in the mix here. Clearly we know a thing or two about getting a tan the safe way!).
And to all the novices out there looking to get stuck into tanning now that we’ve entered the summer season, you’ve come to the right place to start your journey (but first make sure to read up on what to do before you apply your fake tan!).
Bondi Sands Liquid Gold Self-Tanning Foam
The original Liquid Gold Dry Oil built itself quite a loyal following, so it makes sense that Bondi Sands harnessed the goodness of the quick-dry, long-lasting bronzing formula and put it in a foam formulation. And just like the OG Liquid Gold, the Liquid Gold Foam requires no rinsing after application, so you can just apply and let the tan develop into a natural golden colour. That’s it.
St. Tropez Self Tan Extra Dark Bronzing Mousse
Some like their faux glow to look just a touch sun-kissed, while others want to go from a cream shade of winter pale to looking like they’ve spent a month living on the beach in Bora Bora in a matter of hours. And St. Tropez Self Tan Extra Dark Bronzing Mousse delivers the latter in spades. In just four hours, the luxurious (and very easy to apply) foam gives skin a dark bronze hue that still looks natural. And, if you’re game to wait another four hours (or you know, apply your tan before bed and let sleep be your wait time), you’ll be gifted with a deep tan that’s even better than your friend’s post-European summer glow.
Kora Organics Gradual Self-Tanning Lotion
This gradual self-tanner is an excellent choice when you want a natural finish using natural ingredients. The nourishing moisturiser (it, of course, features Kora’s hero ingredient noni oil) slowly builds into a bronzed colour with the help of an ingredient derived from sugar (fun fact: the molecules in sugar actually turn brown over time, which is why it gives you a natural-looking tan). And hey, if it’s good enough for Miranda…
James Read Tan Coconut Water Tan Mist Body
Our friend James Read is no stranger to tanning innovations, and his latest brings together two of our favourite things: no-fail tanning and easy body moisturising. The lightweight formula of the Coconut Water Tan Mist dries pretty quickly post-spritz, and the colour slowly develops into a natural, warm colour. And while the fake tan formula works its magic, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and coconut water are working to hydrate, soften and replenish skin.
Le Tan Uber Glow
Is your summer vibe bronze skin with a side of luminous glow? Then stock up on the Le Tan Uber Glow range. The foam formula contains illuminating ingredients (like nourishing macadamia oil) to give your skin a medium golden glow that, well, glows. You can also pick the base that best suits your skin tone, so you can breathe easy knowing the end result will look as natural as possible. If you have medium skin and tend to tan easily, the Violet Base is best for you, while those with naturally fair skin should opt for the Ash Base. And if you have *no* idea, just pick the all-skin-tone-friendly Green Base.
La Mav Anti-Ageing Face Tan Serum
It’s likely that nine out of 10 women are terrified of tanning their face for fear that the colour will be too intense or come out streaky. The solution? Finding a skin care product that not only makes tanning your face significantly less terrifying by delivering a natural finish that gradually builds to your desired colour, but also offers hydration and anti-ageing benefits. La Mav Anti-Ageing Face Tan Serum kills two birds with one stone. Plus, this one is Australian made, certified organic, 100 per cent vegan, and not tested on animals.
Mecca Max Limited Edition Beyond Bronze Body Luminiser
For the most part, fake tanning takes some prep and planning. But if the pre-tan work is not your forte, the Beyond Bronze Body Luminiser is a handy tube to keep in your bathroom cabinet. The bronze and shimmer lotion will give your limbs an instant hit of colour and glow, and builds wonderfully to give you an even colour that’s as deep as you’d like. And come the end of the night, you can simply wash it off. A nice little added bonus? It’s 100 per cent vegan and cruelty free.
Just hurry and stock up while you can – it’s here for a good time, not a long time! (And word is it’s already selling like hotcakes)
Sisley Self-Tanning Hydrating Facial Skin Care
If you have a fair complexion, you’re probably faced with two conundrums when it comes to face tanning: finding a tan that adds the right depth of colour (i.e. just a touch), and feeling confident that the end result won’t be too warm or orange. Thankfully the Sisley Self-Tanning Hydrating Facial Skin Care finds the perfect balance in colour depth and tone, ensuring that even those with the fairest of complexions will feel satisfied with the result. The even, long-lasting tan will start to kick in two hours after application, but you’ll notice the moisturising benefits almost straight away
Mine Tan Nano Mist Compact
Well, if the most recent tanning launches are anything to go by, face tanning is having its moment in the, erm, sun, and Mine Tan’s latest innovation may just be one of the coolest face tanning products we’ve come across. The teeny hand-held device slides down to reveal a spray that dispenses ultra-fine atomised particles that give you an even, flawless tan that absorbs into your skin super quickly to develop into a golden natural tan on your face, neck and décolletage. You can stop at one layer for a natural finish, or keep building until you’ve got your desired depth of colour. Plus, because the tool is small, it’s easy to cart around for tanning on the go. Our advice? Save this more for sleepovers-at-your-partner’s situations rather than bathroom-break-at-the-bar scenarios.
ModelCo Tan Water
Remember when micellar water was the coolest water on the block? It looks like it may have to take a backseat for a sec and let tanning waters have their moment. This cruelty free and vegan tan looks like a humble spritz bottle of H2O, but what’s inside is so much cooler. Enriched with nourishing ingredients like green tea extract, rose Bulgaria flower oil and coconut water for skin hydration and illumination, the Tan Water also features tanning agents that develop into a natural medium bronze colour in just four hours. Simply spray, blend and let it do its thing. Genius.
Natio Sun-Kissed Glow Gradual Tan Lotion
Natio has always had a strong reputation for delivering quality natural products at budget-friendly prices, and the Sun-Kissed Glow Gradual Tan Lotion is no exception. Use it daily in place of your regular moisturiser for limbs that feel delightfully soft, and – after a few days – look a touch more golden. Just don’t forget to wash your hands after each application; while you may not notice a difference after one day, a few days of layering could leave you with bronzed palms!
Bondi Sands Glo
Yep, Bondi Sands have been pretty hard at work giving us all the tanning solutions we could ever need. The Glo range deserves special mention not only because it’s the easiest answer to all of our last-minute tanning dilemmas in the form of instant colour (and washes off easily with some soap and water), but you can choose the kind of finish you want to pair with your temporary tan. Gloss will leave your skin immediately luminous with an enviable bronze sheen, while Matte, as you’d imagine, leaves an even and velvety finish, and Shimmer contains light-reflecting particles that give a glistening effect. We’ll take all three, thanks.
endota Organics™ Jojoba & Coconut Dry Shimmer Oil
What’s a girl to do when all she wants is the most subtle of bronze sheens? Perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to go the whole hog on the tanning front, the endota Organics™ Jojoba & Coconut Dry Shimmer Oil combines subtle bronze colour with a shimmering finish and naturally-derived oils to hydrate your skin and leave it glistening. And the oil is perfection when a few drops are added to your everyday foundation.
This one is hitting shelves November 19, so mark your calendars!
