Because a palm full of old hair gel just won’t cut it anymore
Want to transform your hair into a look with attitude? Here are the basic products every guy should stock in their cabinet for a slicker-than-your-average hairstyle.
Flexible hairspray… such as Toni&Guy Casual Flexible Hold Hairspray
For styles like the pompadour (think brushed up and back like Zac Efron) and the Teddy Boy (teased at the front with lots of height like Brad Pitt), you’re going to need some hairspray to keep your style in place all day. When you’re shopping for one, look for keywords such as ‘flexible’, ‘light’ or ‘moveable texture’, as these formulas generally won’t leave your hair looking crunchy like Justin Timberlake’s iconic 90’s style.
Comb… such as ghd tail comb
It’s just as important to keep your part precise for longer or more intricate hairstyles that involve backcombing and blow-drying. A good quality one won’t snap strands when you’re pulling it through wet hair or damage your skin when the bristles touch your scalp, so it’s really important to invest in a tool that’ll last. Use the pointy side first to create a part, then the comb to put damp or dry hair in place.
Matte paste… such as Aveda Men Pure-formance Grooming Clay
Here’s where the fun begins. Transform flat-looking or freshly washed hair into a style with attitude with a touch of paste, worked into your roots and mid-lengths. Warm a small dollop (about a pea-sized amount) in your fingers and pull small sections of hair in different directions to instantly give it texture and movement.
Volumising powder… such as Charles Worthington Volume & Bounce Rootlift Backcomb Powder
Fine or thinning hair will really benefit from a sprinkle of volumising powder, as the light and airy product will invisibly clutch onto each strand without being detectable. A good application begins with a light dusting into fingertips then working the product into roots and mid-lengths for a good boost of height.
Dry shampoo… such as Batiste Coloured Dry Shampoo
A light spritz of dry shampoo over clean hair is a great solution for times when you need just a touch of volume or grit. Best of all, a tinted version like Batiste’s Coloured Dry Shampoo can be a quick fix over greys. Warning - steer clear of mixing this product with something like a paste or wax as it will just make your hair look dirty (or worse, dandruff-y), which is exactly the opposite of what you want to achieve.
Sea salt spray… such as L’Oreal Tecni.ART Wildstyler Beachwaves
For a mussed-up look, you can’t go past a few spritzes of a sea salt spray, especially for guys with longer hairstyles. This one from L’Oreal has a mattifying finish which looks effortlessly sexy at any time of the day, and lightly grabs onto hair without looking goopy or sticky.
