Consider this all the inspiration you need for the cooler season

Beauty Crew Contributor / March 11 2020

From New York to Paris, the Fall/Winter 2020 runways displayed a plethora of beauty looks that were particularly, well, trendy — full of artful, experimental and innovative hair and makeup that had us mentally stocking up on the products we’d need to replicate them. And while some of the trends were a little OTT for the everyday, there were just as many looks that were actually incredibly achievable and wearable. From the return of the red lip to adorable hair adornments to jazz up any bad hair day, here are just four trends from Fashion Month we predict you’ll be wearing in the next few months.

#1 / Embellishments all over

Alice+Olivia F/W 2020 New York

Jonathan Cohen F/W 2020 New York

Baja East F/W 2020 Los Angeles

For those seeking a bit more glamour in their beauty, you’ll be happy to see how the hair and makeup pros behind the runway looks have given you ample inspiration to switch things up when you’re in the mood. While gem-adorned hair and faces have been quite popular on the runways over the past few years, this season’s palette was especially eye-catching and dream-like. At Alice + Olivia, lead hairstylist Justine Marjan carefully placed rhinestones throughout each model’s hair with glue and tweezers for a ‘70s-inspired look (that worked beautifully with the glitzy eye makeup). Similarly, at Jonathan Cohen, hairstylist Laurent Phillipon went for a more romantic feel, styling some of the models with oversized pearls. The playfulness then continued at Baja East, where models were fashioned with bold eyeshadows coated with glitter using makeup products from Morphe Cosmetics and crystals provided by Swarovski.

If you feel like taking inspiration from these shows dust a subtle glitter shade on your eyelids (it’s even as easy as layering over your usual go-to matte shade!) with Morphe 39L Hit The Lights Artistry Palette, or for pearl-embellished strands, style your hair with a few loose curls and pin one side back with a pearl clip of your choice. Easy! We love the Simone Rocha Floral Faux-Pearl Beaded Hair Slide.

#2 / The return of the classic red lip

Marc Jacobs Fall 2020 New York

Proenza Schouler Fall 2020 New York

Jil Sander Fall 2020 Milan

After a few seasons of ‘no makeup’ makeup and barely-there lips, it was refreshing to see the comeback of the statement red lip, with the likes of Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler and Jil Sander all serving this beauty look down the catwalk. Backstage at Marc Jacobs, makeup artist Pat McGrath paired Marc Jacobs cult favourites, Cream & Sugar lip liner and Miss Scarlet lipstick to create crimson mouths for each model. Taking inspiration from the notion of individuality, she explained: “When you think of black eyeliner and red lipstick, you think of all time periods”. Artists at shows like Proenza Schouler and Jil Sander followed suit, pairing pops of bright-red, matte lipsticks with bare skin that could be seen from a mile away. To allow for your lips to have maximum impact, follow Jil Sander and Proenza Schouler’s lead and keep the rest of your beauty look to a bare minimum. And if you're terrified of a red lip because application can be tricky, here's how to expertly apply the perfect statement lip

#3 / Sleek and simple hair

Oscar de la Renta Fall 2020 New York

Jil Sander Fall 2020 Milan

Loewe Fall 2020 Paris

Sometimes the quietest of looks make the biggest impact. The sleek low ponytail made its fair share of appearances during Fashion Month, including at Oscar de la Renta and Loewe, each adding their own spin for all the low-maintenance girls to adopt. Backstage at Oscar de la Renta, Odile Gilbert took a pared-back approach sending models down the runway with middle-part low ponytails. Over at Jil Sander, the models wore simple, gelled-back low ponytails with side parts. And for Loewe’s collection, hairstylist Guido Palau styled model’s hair down with glossy lengths and pristine side parts. "I prepped the hair with Redken Extreme Play Safe to heat-protect the hair during the blow-dry and to create some smoothness. I then deeply side-parted the hair, went in with a little bit of Redken Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame to contain any frizz, then used Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray to secure the look," Palau explained to Allure.

Keen to get in on the action? All you need is your straightener and a high shine serum, like IGK Crybaby Anti-Frizz Smoothing Serum, to create this slick and glossy elegant hairstyle. Our advice? You may want to invest in a tail comb to ensure your part – wherever you choose it – is perfect.

#4 / The evolution of hair accessories

Fendi Fall 2020 Milan

Christian Dior Fall 2020 Paris

Gucci Fall 2020 Milan

Hair accessories have been making a big name for themselves in previous years – from the hair scarves adorning ponytails and buns, to embellished clips and headbands, there is no shortage of options for styling. So it was no surprise that they were featured heavily again this season – but this time with a modern twist. At Fendi, hairstylist Sam McKnight created shiny updos that were adorned with upside-down headbands behind the ears of models such as Bella and Gigi Hadid; while at Dior things were kept understated with silk scarves adding a ‘wake-up-and-go’ feel to undone hair-dos - perfect if your hair just isn’t cooperating or you want to make a statement that's equal parts chic and cool. At Gucci, the glamour was kept alive with models strutting down the runway with crystalised headbands and middle-parted hair. To replicate any of these fuss-free looks, Shashi Studio 54 headband, Etro Crystal-Embellished Metal Headband or Frankie Peach Moroccan Bloom Maroon Silk Scarf are great options.
