The black-owned beauty brands you should be buying from

and yep, they’re all available in Australia!

The global response to the murder of George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests across the world has highlighted the importance of doing our part as individuals to ensure we are dismantling the societal infrastructure that disenfranchises people of colour.

And while it may seem small, where you direct your dollars as a consumer matters.

With that in mind, we think it’s a perfect time to highlight some excellent black-owned beauty brands that are available to purchase in Australia.

Fenty Beauty

Do we really *need* to list the reasons why this brand is so influential? A foundation shade range lauded for being so inclusive, one could argue the brand was the catalyst for the foundation shade extension trend that has been taking the beauty industry by storm for the last few years. Plus, it doesn’t hurt having global superstar Rihanna as the face and founder.

Shea Moisture

Family-owned, natural, certified organic, sustainably produced and made with ethically sourced ingredients. Shea Moisture is a hair, skin and body collection that’s gentle on skin and on the wallet – we suggest snagging a bottle or two of their Raw Shea Butter Hydrating Body Lotion on your next supermarket shop.

Briogeo

Find us someone who doesn’t love Briogeo, we’ll wait. Since launching two years ago, this cult brand has become one of the most talked about hair care lines in the world. The silicone-free range features delicious-smelling, fruit-inspired products.

Pat McGrath Labs

Known to the beauty industry simply as ‘mother’, Pat McGrath is a legend in her own right as one of the world’s most sought after makeup artists. But her makeup collection Pat McGrath Labs is undoubtedly one of the most exciting cosmetic brands we’ve ever seen. With each new launch we’re exposed to new pigments, shadows and lip colours that inject a bit of fantasy and glamour into our lives. LOVE.

Beauty Bakerie

Arguably one of the most talked about beauty start-ups of the last few years, Beauty Bakerie delivers high quality makeup in an adorable bakery-inspired format. Think setting powder that looks like a bag of flour and highlighter packaged in a tub of frosting.

Juvia’s Place

If you’re after a reasonably priced, well-curated palette of high-quality eye shadows, look no further than Juvia’s Place. The brand creates eyeshadows with a rich colour payoff and packages them in slimline palettes decorated with *stunning* afro-centric illustrations that you will be proud to add to your makeup collection.

Since then, her keen interest in fashion and beauty has landed her gigs as a Digital Content Producer and Beauty Editor with titles like Girlfriend, Refinery29, BEAUTYcrew and beautyheaven. She loves the way seemingly innocuous topics like skin care and style have the ability to put a smile on people’s faces or make them think about themselves a little differently. A big believer in self love and experimentation, Briar has made a point of becoming the Australian beauty industry’s unofficial guinea pig for unusual treatments and daring hair trends. When she’s not testing out the latest beauty launches, Briar is big on broadening her horizons, mostly in the form of food but she’s also partial to travelling to new destinations both near and far (and of course, allocating an extra bag to bring their best beauty offerings home with her).
