According to Pinterest’s annual 100 report

Beauty Crew Beauty Writer / January 15 2018

If you’ve ever been on the hunt for some serious beauty inspiration, be it for Halloween makeup, glittery Christmas eye looks or simply new ways to style your hair throughout the week, chances are Pinterest has been one of your first ports of call.

And it’s because of those searches for beauty inspiration that Pinterest is able to create its annual 100 report. The report, which uses the saved and searched activity of Pinterest users throughout the year, predicts the top trends in a range of categories (food, home décor, fashion, beauty and travel) that are likely to emerge in the coming 12 months.

If you want to get ahead of the curve and discover the top hair and makeup trends you’re most likely to experiment with in the new year, then read on for the highlights of Pinterest’s report.

#1 / Long lashes

Long and fluttery lashes are officially ‘in’ according to the Pinterest report. So much so that searches for ‘lashes have increased by 152 per cent in the last 12 months.

If you are looking to get in on this trend and boost the impact of your lashes then you might be surprised to know that it’s your mascara’s wand that can make all the difference, as opposed to its formula.

Some of our favourite mascara picks for creating long lashes include L’Oréal Paris Volume Million Lashes Feline Mascara, Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara and COVERGIRL Plumpify blastPRO Mascara.

#2 / Cleansing oils

Cleansing oils have experienced a renaissance in recent years, with brand after brand launching a new formula that promises to cleanse and nourish skin. And it looks like their efforts have paid off as searches for ‘cleansing oil’ have risen a whopping 555 per cent in 2017.

So, what’s so good about cleansing oils anyway? They’re incredibly effective in ridding skin of dirt, excess oils and impurities without leaving it feeling stripped and tight. As oil dissolves oil, you’re essentially enlisting ‘good’ oils to help break down and drive out ‘bad’ oils i.e. sebum that can clog pores.

We love The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil, Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil and L’Occitane Shea Cleansing Oil.

#3 / Skin tone-inclusive foundations

Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty makeup line made waves in the beauty world in 2017 for its skin tone-inclusive foundation that included a range of 40 different shades. It seems the hype from that launch has sparked an interest in foundations that match the fairest to the darkest skin tone, with searches for the topic having risen by 378 per cent.

#4 / Long hair and pixie cuts

It seems the bob and lob haircuts’ time to shine may officially be over. While a plethora of celebrities have jumped aboard the bob bandwagon over the past year, Pinterest has reported a surge in searches for long hair and pixie cuts – who would have thought?

#5 / Facial rollers

Pinterest users now want to take their skin care into their own hands as searches for ‘derma roller’ has risen by 345 per cent this year. Whether it’s microneedling you’re after, or the less extreme jade or quartz options, facial rollers can be highly effective in increasing oxygen levels in skin, eliminating toxins and promoting facial relaxation.

If you want to dabble into the world of facial rollers, we'd recommend trying Muk'ti Micro Dermal Roller, I Am Natural Store Jade or Rose Quartz Roller

It turns out Pinterest users aren’t the only ones who are fans of facial rollers: it’s also the bargain skin care tool that Victoria’s Secret Angels swear by.
