We must admit, we’ve never thought “damn, I want my skin to look like *that*” when we butter our toast every morning. But you know what, we do now.

There’s a new beauty trend making the rounds on the Internet and once you see it, we’re pretty sure you’ll be hooked.

Introducing buttery skin.

Just look at that totally flawless base and ultra-glowy skin with its butter-like sheen. Stunning, right?!

Naturally, we’re dying to try the look for ourselves. To get the lowdown, we hit up the trend’s creator – Australian makeup artist Isabelle de Vries – for the inside scoop on what we need to know about this gorgeous glowing beauty look.

What is buttery skin?

De Vries explains it as “that lived-in glow” which is created using a mixture of both skin care and makeup.

Can everyone get on board with this trend?

You’d be forgiven for thinking you need flawless skin to nail this look. But de Vries has good news – since a lot of the look is created with makeup, anyone can give it a go. “Let’s face it, we don’t all have amazing poreless skin. [Buttery skin] is all about beautiful, healthy, glowing-looking skin, and can be achieved on all skin types,” says de Vries.

So how does skin care come into it?

While makeup will take care of that glossy, buttery sheen, the more hydrated and dewy your skin is underneath, the greater the glow payoff. De Vries likes to prep the skin using chemical exfoliators and ultra-hydrating masks. “I love using the Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel pads as they remove all the dead skin and any dry or congested areas, and instantly reveal a clear, smooth base. I then like to use a hydration mask. I use Garnier Hydra Bomb Tissue Masks but any kind of hyaluronic mask is good!”

What do we need in our makeup kit?

This look is all about layers, and every layer is all about building that glowed-up finish. We’re not going to lie, you need A LOT of product, but we think it’s worth it. Plus, you probably have a lot of the essentials in your makeup kit already.

De Vries recommends kicking off the makeup application with an illuminating primer. Some of her favourites are MAC Strobe Cream, Danessa Myricks Beauty Prism FX Hydrating Lotion and Temptu Brilliant Glow Illuminating Primer & Skin Perfector.

Next up, she reaches for a dewy foundation. “If you have a great complexion you can go with more of a sheer finish, but for people like myself, I need more of a full coverage so I will build up my foundation and then [add] a creamy concealer in the areas I need extra coverage.”

On to layer number three. To amplify the dewy, butter-like sheen on your skin, you’ll need to layer light-reflecting products such as highlighters or illuminators. De Vries likes to mix them into foundation, as well as apply a liquid highlighter to the high points of the face.

“I mix a pearlescent liquid highlighter through my foundations, like Temptu [S/B Highliter Makeup] in White Shimmer/Pink Pearl or Danessa Myricks Illuminating Veil,” says de Vries.

To ensure the complexion doesn’t end up looking too shiny or lose its depth, de Vries adds a powder contour.

“To finish up, I use a dewy finishing spray and the final touch is the Danessa Myricks Dew Wet Balm over the cheekbones. This is like a clear non-sticky face sheen; it’s best applied patted on with your fingers and can also be applied to your eyelids.” explains de Vries.
