Everyday beauty mistakes you might be making

Common Beauty Fails & How To Stop Making Them

And the easy fixes for each of them!

New Idea Beauty Editor WHO and New Idea / February 27 2018

Are you starting and ending each day with the wrong beauty routine? Has your makeup bag expired? We flag four common beauty blunders and easy ways to master them.

#1 / Not buying new makeup regularly enough

If you’re still holding on to your favourite lipstick and eyeshadow from two years ago, it might be time to consider an update (yes, we’re giving you permission to shop!). Just like sunscreen and moisturisers, makeup has an expiry date. At best, most products will last anywhere between six months to two years. Pay particular attention to products you use on your eyes. Mascaras, eyeshadows and eyeliners will need to be replaced more often to minimise the risk of infections in the area. Also, aim to clean your sponges and brushes as often as possible to avoid any bacterial build-up – just read this article on how dirty your makeup brushes really are for all the incentive you could ever need to clean them ASAP!

#2 / Trying to speed-dry your hair

Roughly drying hair causes major frizz, so spend some extra time to make sure hair is completely dry all over. Gently squeeze out excess water and pat dry, and always air dry when possible. Also, consider a weekly hair treatment. If you’re only conditioning your ends, your hair and scalp can become dry, damaged and prone to breakage. Masks will replenish moisture, leaving hair nourished, strong and less prone to frizz.

#3 / Failing to extend your skin care products beyond your jawline

If you’re a side sleeper or if your skin care routine stops at your chin, you’ll eventually notice the lack of attention you’ve been paying to your neck and décolletage. The skin here needs just as much TLC as your face, so make sure you treat it in the same way. Start applying anti-ageing creams to these areas and when you’re applying your daily SPF to your face, always extend it down your neck and chest.

#4 / Leaving your hair removal to the last minute

When it comes to hair removal, we’ve all been guilty of an after-thought rush job with the razor blade. Not using a gel or cream can be drying and damaging on skin. Try to take a leaf out of your partner’s book and be prepared with a nourishing gel or better still, try a gentle razor blade with in-built moisturising ingredients.
