Exclusive: Elle Ferguson just got 'The Rachel' and here's how you can too

Her hairdresser spills on the modernised style

September 17 2020

Elle Ferguson has become so synonymous with her long, blonde beachy hair that it was hard to imagine her with any other style.

But if there was ever going to be one look to inspire an entire hair transformation, it had to be 'The Rachel'.

Taking Ferguson from balayage to brunette in just one session, hairdresser Travis Balcke has created a long, face-framing and layered lob, to modernise the '90s cut we all know and love.

Dubbed the 'RachELLE', Balcke exclusively spills to BEAUTYcrew how he created this Friends-inspired style and how you too can get the look at home.

Tip #1/ It's all about face-framing layers

When it comes to the cut itself, Balcke says the modern RachELLE is all about those face-framing layers. "If you have a grown out fringe or layering at the moment, that you're styling back and away from the face, this can instantly be transformed into the RachELLE [with a few styling tweaks]."

Tip #2/ Bring your hair forward

Rather than pushing hair back, Balcke says to blow-dry your hair forwards (but don't worry if you hate hair in your eyes, that will be taken care of later). "Take your hairdryer and a round brush and blow-dry the hair, bringing it forward around and onto the face. [Continue to blow-dry] towards the opposite side of the face and [when you get to] the fringe, [blow-dry it] straight down over your nose."

Tip #3/ Polish with a straightener

Once your style is blow-dried in place, "use your favourite straightening iron to polish the layers in and around the face". To keep hair out of the eyes, staighten outwards until your eye line then, "sweep hair back [toward] the opposite side of the face" to the ends.
