Tried and tested: Marc Jacobs Daisy Trio

Beauty Crew’s editor put three perfumes to the test

Beauty Crew Editor / May 25 2017

I’m not sure whether or not you can put it down to my personality, my star sign, or even my upbringing, but give me a challenge, and I will gladly accept it. Better yet, try and tell me I can’t do said challenge, and I will do anything in my power to prove you wrong.

My latest beauty challenge? To put the Marc Jacobs Daisy Trio (which consists of the original Daisy, Daisy Eau So Fresh, and Daisy Dream) to the test. But not just any test – to wear these three, and only these three, fragrances for a week. This may sound easy, quite a luxury even, but keep in mind that I could be spritzing three fragrances in one day as part of my job.

Marc Jacobs Daisy

Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh

Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream

Full disclosure: While I’ve smelled each of these fruity and floral scents multiple times, I’ve never actually worn any of them, so this was the first time I had experienced the whole development of each fragrance and their notes.

Day 1: Monday mayhem

Scent of choice: Daisy Dream
Mondays are always the worst. Coming off a busy weekend and an early gym session left me feeling a bit flat in the morning, so I needed something to pick me up. And quick.

Described as a floral scent with a light and airy touch, I felt Daisy Dream was a good one to give a go on a busy day of back-to-back meetings and an overfilled inbox.

Admittedly, I did find it quite sweet when I first spritzed it (but I tend to gravitate towards more spicy scents, so that’s no surprise), but as the combination of blackberry, grapefruit and pear dried down and I could smell more of the white woods and musk (and even the hint of the middle note of jasmine), the scent that lingered was much more subtle and a fresh addition to the start of the work week.

Day 2: A mostly low-key Tuesday

Scent of choice: Eau So Fresh
I spritzed Eau So Fresh first thing in the morning and noticed the top notes of grapefruit and raspberry definitely gave it that instant zestiness that Dream doesn’t have.

My first impressions: while it was still quite sweet and fruity, the impact was fresh and not too intense for the start of the day.

My desk-mates impressions: I got a few comments about how nice it smelled after I sprayed, which was good to hear seeing as I didn’t leave my desk all day.

By lunchtime I felt like I needed a pick-me-up and gave my pulse points – wrists and neck – another quick spritz. About 20 minutes after spritzing, I could already smell the floral notes of jasmine, rose and violet were coming through, and then at the end of the day I could smell that hint of the musky base notes.

“I’m not one to take a whiff of my wrists, but I found I did randomly in the day to see how the fragrance was drying down.”

Day 3: Jam-packed Wednesday

Scent of choice: Daisy
Wednesday was packed with it all – meetings, events and post-work plans. I attempted to battle my mid-week slump with the Daisy that started it all way back in 2007 with the uplifting (but not as fresh as Eau so Fresh, which came four years later) and feminine top notes of wild strawberry and grapefruit, and middle notes of violet petals, gardenia and jasmine. I felt like it was a good combination to add some pep to a busy day.

By the time I was done for the day, I could note some subtle hints (keep in mind I did spritz at about 9am) of the vanilla and musk, so I sprayed some more as I left for my dinner plans so I could make more of a statement as I arrived. That seemed to pay off, as not one person noticed my bold red lip and yet everyone commented on my perfume.

Day 3 and 4: Marc Jacobs Daisy

Day 3 and 4: Marc Jacobs Daisy

Day 4: Quiet Thursday

Scent of choice: Daisy
Yep, I did a back-to-back of the original Daisy. After a day of wearing it, I could see why the combination of fruity, floral, and woody notes has made it one of the most popular fragrances around.

Because this perfume (well, all of them, actually) is an EDT, I did find the fragrance dissipated after a few hours, so I topped up on the scent an extra time in the day compared to the day before.

“Side note: I’d noticed my Daisy Dream had gone missing from my desk and discovered our beauty ed Iantha, inspired by my week challenge, had quietly ‘borrowed’ it.”

Day 5: Casual Friday

Scent of choice: Eau So Fresh
For the last day of my Daisy Trio trial, Friday, I decided to go with the freshest and zestiest one: Eau So Fresh, because who doesn’t need a pick-me-up on a Friday morning!

The mix of grapefruit, raspberry, pear, and apple blossom just felt like the right match for my casual Friday wear and half top-knot, and gave an extra sense of frivolity to the day (deadlines be damned!).

Final verdict

The winter chill has finally hit Sydney (well, as far as I’m concerned anyway) and I found the fresh and sweet scents were actually a nice way to counteract the colder mornings and nights. And while these typically aren’t scents I’d spritz on for nighttime plans, I found people noticed it more because the notes weren’t expected.

If I had to pick just one of the three, I think I’d go with Eau So Fresh. While all shared notes of daisy (of course), and started off with fresh floral and fruity notes and dried down to something a bit more subtly woody and musky, Eau So Fresh seemed to have that extra zestiness to it that appealed to me, and seemed to be the one that people complimented most.
