It’s a story we’re all familiar with: You rock up to the gym and throw your hair into a quick bun to get it out of the way, only to have it fall halfway down your head after just two minutes on the treadmill. If you’re sick of wet, sticky strands literally getting in the way of your #fitnessgoals, it’s time to update your gym hairstyle.
To make things easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite gym-approved hairstyles, guaranteed to stay in place during even the most strenuous cardio sessions.
Double boxer braids
If you’re after a heavy-duty hairstyle that Does. Not. Budge. opt for boxer braids. The tight, intricate double plait will ensure you can sprint on a treadmill and take on a punching bag without your hair moving an inch. If you’re not sure how to nail the style, check out our guide on perfecting the Dutch braid (another name this braided hairstyle goes by).
If you find fly-aways or loose choppy layers are getting in the way of your workout, braid the top section of your hair, starting at the crown of your head, then secure the lengths into a ponytail. Not only does this style look ever-so-chic, it’s one of the most practical (and quicker to create than a boxer braid).
The classic high ponytail is still a gym staple and by far the easiest to create – just make sure you apply a smoothing serum like Kiehl’s Smoothing Oil-Infused Leave-In Concentrate to keep sweaty fly-aways in check. Added bonus: The versatile formula will also nourish your strands while boosting shine.
Another great thing about the humble high pony is how you can take it from the gym to post-workout drinks in one step – simply spritz your favourite texturising spray throughout the ends to glam up your look and you’re good to go.
We get it, sometimes even the thought of having your sweaty ponytail swishing against the back of your neck is too much of a distraction. So, if you’re not quite ready to give up on your workout bun but want to stop it falling down after your first clean and press, it’s time to invest in some quality hair elastics. Enter Invisibobble hair ties. They’re your hair’s knights in spiral armour; not only will they hold your hair in place no matter your mane’s length or thickness, they won’t leave any kinks – even after a whole day of wear.
‘90s hair trends are well and truly back in fashion, which is why you won’t feel out of place throwing on a headband the next time you hit the gym. A (stylish) sweatband will work wonders to absorb any perspiration along your hairline, while ensuring your hair stays out of your face.
Transform your classic high ponytail by braiding or simply twisting the ends, before securing it with a hair elastic. While just as effective as the classic ponytail, this look will minimise the amount of sweaty hair falling against the nape of your neck.
When in doubt, slick it back. While being one of the most practical workout hairstyles for keeping hair off both your face and neck, it’s also one of the most stylish. So much so that you can waltz into the office or to drinks with friends with the exact same hairstyle you wore during your sweat session. How’s that for efficiency?
If you've made it to the end of this gallery and still think you're going to rock up at the gym with your hair thrown into a quick bun, we get it. While these styles all look great, actually making the effort to style your hair for the gym isn't always realistic. So, to ensure that you still get to try these chic-yet-practical looks, we suggest opting for any one of them post-workout, whether you're running from to gym to work, brunch, dinner, drinks or any social event in between.
