Kate Middleton’s hairdresser reveals his secrets

Here’s how to create the Duchess’ signature blowdry

Beauty Crew Beauty Editor / May 03 2016

We trawled through years of Kate Middleton pics in the office and one thing’s for certain - she never has a hair out of place. Her go-to look is simple, yet incredibly elegant; consisting of a smooth, sleek and shiny blowdry that boasts lots of body and guarantees movement.

And there’s one person to thank and praise. The stylist behind her incredible coiffure is Richard Ward, a hairstylist hailing from London that’s designed her ‘do for several years. Yes, we’re talking years before she was crowned Duchess, right through to her wedding, and beyond.

So, we were curious… how can we get her look at home? Read on to find out more.

1

Start with a clean base

Wash your hair with a volumising shampoo, and follow with a conditioning masque. “A deep-conditioning treatment once every two weeks for fifteen minutes can help restore any lost moisture and nourish damaged lengths and ends,” says Ward.

TOP TIP: Rinse your hair with cold water after conditioning; it may sound torturous, but it can make a big difference as it helps to seal the hair cuticle shut for extra glossy, shiny locks.

2

Dry it off

Towel dry your hair by gently pressing excess any water out.

3

Build some texture

Spritz a root-lifting spray, like L’Oreal Professionnel Tecni.ART Wildstyler Crépage De Chignon, evenly throughout your hair. “The best way to do so is by turning your head upside down, and spray the product from your roots to tips,” continues Ward. Doing so will ensure that the product is evenly spread out.

4

Create more lift

Using a hairdryer with a pointed nozzle (such as Silver Bullet City Chic Hairdryer), blowdry your hair all over, using your fingers to lift your hair at the roots to create more volume. Do so until your hair is about 80% dry.

5

Style it up

Divide your hair into small 2-inch sections, and wrap each section around some velcro rollers. “When using velcro rollers, make sure they are firmly in place and secured with a clip - this is when the all-important root lift happens,” continues Ward.

6

Finish it off

Wait about five minutes for your hair to cool down, and take the rollers out. Then, disperse one or two pumps of serum such as Richard Ward The Chelsea Collection Anti-Ageing Argan Elixir into your palms and distribute from your mid-lengths to ends by combing it through with your fingers.

A serum will also banish frizz and protect the hair from drying out through the day.
