Get salon-worthy hair at home

Create a head-turning hairdo without having to leave the house

New Idea / January 11 2017

Having a professional hairstylist whip your tresses into shape is a true pleasure. But having to carve out the time – and the cash
– means that, for most of us, salon visits are a rare luxury. The good news is, with just a little bit of effort on your part, you can create salon-styled hair in the privacy of your own home – even saving money while you’re at it!

1

Take care of your tresses

Salon-worthy hair means regular hydrating treatments to reverse damage. Use a masque weekly and leave it on for at least three minutes. We love Matrix Biolage SmoothProof Mask. Want to up the impact? Rinse out with cold water. “It takes courage, but cold water will close the cuticle. Hair will reflect light better and look super shiny,” says hairstylist Anthony Nader of RAW Hair Salon.

2

Kill the frizz

Professional hair means no frizz. Stylists achieve this with straightening irons, which they glide through hair from the root to the very tip. “For a professional finish, straighten only small sections at a time and get as close to the scalp as you can,” says Nader. Try Remington Keratin & Argan Oil Nourish Straightener.

3

Avoid damaging strands

Remember: Never brush wet hair! Instead, grab a detangling Tangle Teezer, which will ensure minimal hair breakage and damage. The memory flex teeth glide through wet hair without any tugging or pulling.

4

Add plenty of volume

True glamour means big, bouncy hair. To create this effect at home, blow-dry as you would normally, then flip your hair upside down. Take a texturising powder like V05 Give Me Texture Instant Oomph Powder, or dry shampoo and apply it at the roots. Massage in, flip your head back
and voila – instant va-va-voom!

5

Create curls that last

The secret to long-lasting curls? Nader says to take a round-barrel heated tong and wrap
a 5-7 cm section of hair around it. Remove the tong, roll the curl flat and slide in a large pin and secure it to your head so that it holds its shape. Do this with about eight sections of hair, focusing on the sections that frame your face. Allow them to cool down , then remove the pins and reveal your loose, sexy curls. To get the look, try VS Sassoon Big Hair Soft Curls Styler.
