Match your makeup to your fascinator

How to match your makeup to your fascinator

A makeup artist shares her advice for a seamless look

There are so many things to look forward to when it comes to a racing event: from spending the weekend outdoors (hopefully it’s good weather!), to having a champagne or two with close friends, to even watching the horses zoom towards the finishing line, which is equal parts exhilarating and exciting.

Another thing that comes with the fun of attending a race day is picking an outfit that goes with the theme of the event; and a detail that’s an absolute essential for women is a special headpiece, which can be just as important to consider as your dress, shoes, jewellery and bag.

We picked out three of our favourite headpieces of the season, and asked makeup artist Jasmin Lo to share her best advice on matching your makeup to your fascinator.

1

If you’re wearing a metallic fascinator

Turn heads this season with a statement piece, such as this Lady of Leisure Gold Comet headband. And with an accessory so outstanding, it’s important to make sure your makeup carries the same theme. “A matching metallic eye would be so gorgeous with this headband, so use a concentrated wash of gold, rose gold or bronze on the eyelid,” says Lo. “As for the rest of your makeup, keep your skin nice and velvet (try a mattifying lotion on your T-zone if you’re prone to shine), and use highlighter sparingly to avoid looking like a gold statue.”

TOP TIP: For your eyeshadow, go with a cream shadow formula, such as CHANEL Illusion d’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow, as they’re easier to blend than powder formulas, are usually long-lasting, and aren’t prone to shadow fallout which can affect your overall look.

2

If you’re wearing a coloured fascinator

If you’re one to lean towards wearing colour at the races this season (this Lady of Leisure Aurora in Rose Gold Cerise is fit for the occasion), don’t be afraid to also wear a coloured lip to match. “A gorgeous, creamy crimson lip would be amazing,” says Lo. “Just don’t forget to anchor your look with a full and tidy brow created with a brow pencil (such as Rimmel London Professional Eyebrow Pencil) to fill in any gaps and to extend the shape to frame your face properly.”

3

If you’re wearing a black fascinator

A striking black fascinator, such as Natalie Bikicki’s Black Leaves Fascinator, is dramatic and definitely not for the shy or fainthearted. But how should you wear your makeup to go with this bold headpiece? “Keep the rest of your face quite low-key, and make it all about your skin,” recommends Lo. “Go with a tinted moisturiser (like Urban Decay Naked Skin Beauty Balm) rather than a full coverage foundation, to let your freckles sing through. The Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette is perfect for this look as you can lightly contour under your cheekbones and highlight on the high points of your face. Add a light layer onto eyelids as well for some subtle definition.”
