Stuck in a bit of a rut? Here’s how to shake things up

Beauty Crew Editor / May 29 2017

Whether intentional or not, we all seem to find ourselves in a hair rut at one point or another. Sometimes it’s the result of asking your hairdresser for the same haircut year after year, or maybe you’ve learnt how to master a particular hairstyle and that’s all you’ve been doing of late.

While we’re huge advocates for owning what works for you, it would be remiss of us not to remind you that the wonderful world of beauty is also about having fun.

So if you feel like you need to shake things up with your hair, here are some temporary, yet very effective ways to give your hairstyle some extra pizazz.

1

Try a temporary fashion colour

If you’ve been trawling social media or browsing Pinterest at all in the last year or so, you would have seen that vibrant hair colours like pink, purple and aqua have become huge. While it may seem like a big leap to try it out for yourself, you’ll be pleased to know that there are a few commitment-free ways to be a colour chameleon and give your colour of choice a whirl on any given weekend.

For a one day foray into bold colour, try L’Oréal Paris Colorista 1-Day Spray. Available in five shades – four pastel tones that’ll work on lighter hair, and one vibrant shade that works best on brunettes – this is the perfect solution for those who want an instant one-off colour that’ll wash off with ease.

If you’re up for a colour that lasts a little bit longer (but still doesn’t require an epic commitment), try the L’Oréal Paris Colorista Wash Out. With 11 playful shades, pastels for blondes or pre-lightened hair and vivids for brunettes, this product is as simple as applying, rinsing, drying, wearing and letting it fade. Colorista Washouts will last between 2 and 15 washes depending on the colour you choose and your base colour. If you do want to speed up the fading process, you can use the L’Oréal Paris Colorista Colour Fader Shampoo.

TOP TIP: If you’re a natural brunette and want to try one of the lighter hair colour shades, use the L’Oréal Paris Colorista Effects in either All-Over Bleach Or Brunette Ombre to pre-lighten your hair first to ensure your colour of choice pops.

2

Embrace hair accessories

Elevate a simple hairstyle like a ponytail or bun with an edgy metal cuff, a cute tasselled ponytail holder, or ornate clips and jewelled headbands.

These clever little accessories will give your otherwise humble style an elegant or chic finish, making it perfect to wear for those occasions where you may have to dress up but don’t want to wash your hair or spend hours creating an intricate hairstyle.

If you’re looking for some hair accessory inspiration, you’re sure to find it on ASOS, Chloe + Isabel and Sportsgirl.

Learn how to braid

Whether it’s a simple three-strand, a classic French, a whimsical fishtail or an edgy Dutch braid, learning how to master each technique can help give your hairstyle that illustrious cool factor. You can find out how to do each braid in this handy braiding tutorial.

Once you’ve got the braiding techniques down, the world is your oyster when it comes to incorporating them into your look – update your simple ponytail, create a braided crown, wrap a bun with a mini fishtail braid, the list goes on. If you’ve got some length in your hair, here are some great ways to wear a braid, and if you’re sporting or a bob or a lob, these clever short hair braids are the ones to try.
