7 ways to care for platinum blonde hair

These haircare and styling tips will sort you out

Creamy, platinum blonde hair is always hot on the red carpet, however unsurprisingly it’s not an easy colour to maintain (especially if you’re starting out with dark locks). Here, Caterina DiBiase, Australian Hair Fashion Awards 2016 Hairdresser of the Year and L’Oréal Professionnel Ambassador, shares her best tips for looking after this tricky hair colour.

1

Keep it clean

Opt for a shampoo specially formulated for blonde hair to ensure your colour lasts the distance. “Shampoos that are blue or purple based can help remove any unwanted brassiness and keep your colour looking fresh and clean,” says DiBiase. “You can also use a silver shampoo, but alternate this with your regular shampoo or conditioner as they are quite strong, and can make your colour look flat, less shiny, and more unnatural.” Try John Frieda Sheer Blonde Colour Renew Tone-Correcting Shampoo.

TOP TIP: Start with a teaspoon amount of product, and gently massage it into your roots with the pads of your fingers to work it into a lather. Then, take the product right through to your mid-lengths and ends.

2

Condition within

Straight after shampooing, apply a deep conditioning mask to your mid-lengths and ends to nourish dry, straw-like ends. “A mask is a great way to ensure your hair is getting the hydration it needs, especially if your hair is coloured and needs a little bit of TLC,” continues DiBiase. “Just like using a weekly face mask, a hair mask helps to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy and ultimately your colour too.” Try Garnier Fructis Color Last Nourishing Fortifying Mask.

3

Leave it in

Give your hair an extra boost of hydration when you get out of the shower by massaging a leave-in product into mid-lengths and ends. “Hair oils are really good as they’re incredibly versatile with options specifically for fine, medium and thick hair types and even colour-treated hair. You can use them on damp or dry hair and they’re a great way to give your hair an instant moisture boost.” Try L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil Nourishing Oil.

Leave-in treatments are particularly good if you have curly hair, which tends to be more dry and prone to frizz.

4

Visit a professional

Delicate bleached blonde hair tends to snap easily, so visit your hairdresser for an intense reparative treatment to help strengthen locks. “L’Oréal Professionnel’s Pro Fiber in-salon treatment is much more concentrated than at-home treatments and can strengthen the hair fibre again,” says DiBiase.

5

Protect it

Don’t forget to apply a heat protectant before picking up a tong, hairdryer or straightener. “This can give blonde colours that extra protection and add lots of shine.” Try TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Shine Spray

6

Sprinkle it on

This tip is really helpful for days when you want to style your hair up, but don’t have a lot of time. “Styling dusts are really good for blonde hair as they can add a little bit of shine and texture so that the colour doesn’t look too flat,” shares DiBiase. Try Matrix Style Link Height Riser Volumizing Powder.

7

Colour it in

Next time you’re at the hairdresser, ask for this special technique that’ll take your blonde hair colour to the next level. “Similar to makeup contouring, hair contouring uses light and dark foil placements to highlight or soften facial features,” finishes DiBiase.
