The bold makeup look that works at any age

Helen Mirren has given us all the inspiration we need

While our attention was occupied with Kylie Jenner launching her new lip glosses, Cate Blanchett dying her hair pink, and the newest beauty products to hit shelves in April, we completely missed Helen Mirren showing off this amazing red lip look at the premiere of Eye in the Sky in New York.

At 70-years-old, Mirren proves that there’s no such thing as being ‘too old’ for bold makeup (or coloured hair), and that you can embrace colours and trends for as long as you like – just as long as you’re smart about the way you apply your products.

Here’s how you can recreate Helen Mirren’s stunning red lip look, plus a few anti-ageing makeup tips for those concerned with fine lines and wrinkles.

1

Start with your base

Pick a foundation to suit your skin type. For oily skin, try a water-based or mattifying formula to help reduce shine. For those with drier skin, use a creamier foundation formulation that will help hydrate and nourish skin.

For those with lines, it’s best to avoid powder foundations, as these can settle into lines and enhance their appearance.

2

Define your eyes

Give your top and bottom lash lines subtle definition by using a charcoal eyeliner, like MAC Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Industry. If you want to enhance your top lash line, layer the colour for a more intense finish.

Finish off your eyes with two coats of a volumising and curling mascara, like Stila Huge Extreme Lash Mascara.

TOP TIP: If you’ve got small eyes, avoid lining the entire top and bottom lash line. Instead, line your top lash line and a half to a third of your bottom lash line. You can also use your mascara to fan out your outer upper lashes to open up your eyes.

3

Shape your brows

For soft definition to your brows, use a powder, like Maybelline New York Master Brow Pro Palette, to enhance the shape and fill in any sparse areas.

The powder formulation will give your brows a much more natural finish than using a pencil, but if the result is still too strong, use a clean eyeshadow brush or a spoolie to blend the colour out.

4

Colour your cheeks

Lightly dust pink blush, L’Oréal Paris True Match Blush in Sandalwood Pink, on the apples of your cheeks to give your complexion colour and warmth. Just be careful not to overload with colour – you want to keep the pink soft and subtle.

TOP TIP: Apply your blush quite high on your cheeks for a more youthful finish.

5

Finish with red

While a fire-engine red, like L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche in 330 Coco Rico, will suit most skin tones and make teeth look whiter, you can always pick a red that suits your skin tone

If lines around your mouth are a concern, avoid a red (or any lip colour) with a shimmery or metallic finish, as these can accentuate any wrinkles.

To make a lip look youthful, when applying lipstick to the bottom lip, always cut up before the lip corner. Think of maintaining that ‘U’ shape
