The low-key hairstyle is here to stay, so here’s how to get it right
The cool, casual wave may have made the rounds over the last couple of international fashion week shows in New York, London, Paris and Milan, but this season, the laidback hairstyle became even more undone, pared back, and touchable, cementing its place as the low-key hairstyle to add to your repertoire. This summer, equip yourself with products that promote softness and shine, and try your hand at the popular style as seen at the Giambattista Valli SS17 show with expert tips from hairstylist Renya Xydis.

Apply an oil
If you’re starting with dry hair, dampen your hair slightly with a spray of water, then apply Wella SP Luxe Oil Light Spray from the mid-lengths to ends to protect hair from heat styling. Then, split your hair into four quarters.

Twist it up
Take each section and twist it clockwise or anticlockwise until it becomes a tight bun, then clip in place.

Dry it off
Using a hairdryer, like VS Sassoon Salon Professional AC Dryer, lightly aim the heat over the buns until they are dry. This will set the foundation to the waves.

Let your hair down
Release each bun, separate your hair with your fingers and let it all cool down.

Use a heat tool
Take large vertical sections (starting at the front of the hairline) and wrap each section from the mid-lengths around the barrel for approximately five seconds. The Cloud Nine Waving Wand works well here.

Add finishing touches
Once your hair has cooled, brush it out with your fingers and finish with some more of the oil spray from the first step for a soft hold and lots of shine. “This is an effortless hairstyle, so avoid any heavy setting sprays that will cause the hair to be stiff,” says Xydis.
