Your guide to layering perfume

Create your own unique scent in seconds

If you’re bored of spritzing on something that’s readily available on-shelf, then you may want to consider layering several fragrances to create a one-of-a-kind scent that’s bound to turn heads.

Here are three ways to create your own unique blend.

1

Start to experiment

The easiest way to do so is by literally mixing two scents together, much like eating two Jelly Belly lollies at the same time to see how the flavours work as one. Brands like Demeter, Jo Malone, Shay & Blue, and Tom Ford are great starting points for this as they offer fragrances that hero one key note. Start off first by spritzing the scent combination onto a piece of cardboard, then when you think you’re close, mist it over your body to see what it smells like on you.

It’s also possible to muddle two fragrances with greater scent complexities together. For example, you can mist on a girly, floral or musky scent first, and give it some attitude by spraying a green, mossy scent over the top.

2

Don’t just limit yourself to a spritz

Different formulas can lend a hand in customising a scent too. Most of the popular scents on the market come in different iterations, such as bath gels, body creams, lotions, and even hair mists, so take advantage of these products when experimenting with your scent layers.

You can also use this technique to enhance the staying power and longevity of your particular scent. For example, you can start your fragrance journey by washing with Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt Body & Hand Wash, continue by moisturising your skin with the matching Body Créme, and finishing off with a spritz of the Cologne.

3

Enhance with an oil

As scented oils have a greater staying power on skin over sprays, you may also want to try one that carries a rich fragrance. Utilise its strength by rubbing it gently into pulse points, then layer with a spritz of another scent on top. Dior’s J’Adore Touche EDP is a great starting point, as the best-selling floral scent can be muddled with a light aquatic or fruity note for a summery spritz.
