The makeup artists behind these looks spill their secrets

marie claire Contributor / May 25 2017

Feel like you need to branch out from your go-to nude makeup and try something new? These six celebrity looks cover all the key looks you will ever need in your makeup repertoire. Plus, we asked the actual makeup artists who created the original looks to talk us through the exact steps for recreating they makeup yourself.

Jennifer Lawrence’s bold lips

The makeup artist: Jillian Dempsey @jilliandempsey
Other celeb clients: Kristen Stewart, Cara Delevingne, Kate Winslet

How-to:

#1 / Start by moisturising your lips
with a clear balm. “I let it sit on the
lips while I do the eye makeup and then wipe it off before applying lip colour,” says Dempsey.

#2 / Next, apply a lip stain. “That way,
if your bold lip colour fades, you still have a natural looking hint of colour.”

#3 / For precise application, use a fine lip brush to apply your lipstick. “With bold colours, it’s wise to follow your natural lip shape rather than extending the colour beyond your actual lip.”

#4 / “Intense colours can be more high maintenance – so travel with your lip colour and be ready to reapply!”

PRO TIP: “For red carpet, I prefer a satin or semi-matte finish as they allow movement when the actress has to talk on the red carpet. Gloss can be too slippery and matte can be overly drying and restricting.” – Jillian Dempsey, makeup artist

CHANEL Rouge Allure Intense Long-Wear Lip Colour in Ultraberry

Karlie Kloss’s chiselled cheeks

The makeup artist: Sir John @sirjohnofficial
Other celeb clients: Margot Robbie, Joan Smalls, Anja Rubik

How-to:

#1 / Apply a lightweight water-based foundation where needed – “on the forehead, the sides of the nose, the chin and possibly on the jawline and neck, too,” recommends Sir John.

#2 / Dab a cream highlighter on the high points of the cheekbones – but just on the sides.

#3 / Using a taupe coloured blush, start at the inner ear and brush outwards in gentle circular motions to sculpt and define the cheeks.

PRO TIP: “Avoid shimmery highlighters on the centre of the face – it looks greasy in photos.” – Sir John, makeup artist

J.Lo’s bronzed glow

The makeup artist: Mary Phillips @1maryphillips
Other celeb clients: Kim Kardashian, Salma Hayek, Chloë Sevigny

How-to:

#1/ “Apply foundation using a sponge, blush brush [foundation brushes can be too dense] and your fingertips,” suggests Phillips.

#2 / Use a yellow-toned concealer to cancel out any redness.

#3 / Lightly contour the face using a darker foundation at the temples, around the hairline and cheekbones. Blend away any obvious lines.

#4 / Dust bronzer on your temples and top of your cheekbones, and a light application of peach blush on the apples of your cheeks.

#5 / Mist with setting spray to keep your complexion fresh.

PRO TIP: “I alternate foundation formulas depending on the look we want and whether it’s a photo shoot, video or red carpet event.” - Mary Phillips, makeup artist

Gigi Hadid’s gold shadow

The makeup artist: Beau Nelson @beau_nelson
Other celeb clients: Julianne Hough, Nicole Richie, Katy Perry.

How-to:

#1 / Smooth a bronze cream eyeshadow over your entire lid. Using the same colour, sweep it beneath the eyes.

#2 / Apply a gold cream eyeshadow over the top of the bronze.

#3 / To diffuse the edges, “take a clean rounded brush and dip it in a little foundation and go along the edges of the eyeshadow”, says Nelson.

#4 / Define brows by applying powder with an angled brush. “I focus the definition on the outer edge by using a lighter shade at the start of the brow and a darker shade towards the tail.”

PRO TIP: “Creams are more manipulable and take the form and contour of the eye more easily.” – Beau Nelson, makeup artist

MAC Brow Duo in Brunette

Maybelline New York Eyestudio Colour Tattoo in Bad To The Bronze and Bold Gold

NARS Audacious Mascara

Beyonce’s statement eyes

The makeup artist: Sir John @sirjohnofficial
Other celeb clients: Olivia Culpo, Chrissy Teigen, Jourdan Dunn

How-to:

#1 / Choose your colour and apply a waterproof gel liner all over your lid.

#2 / Use a small amount of colour around your tear duct area, stopping just before your lash line begins. For extra impact, layer a shimmery eyeshadow in the same colour over the top.

#3 / Then use “a water-based makeup remover and a clean cotton bud to create a graphic shape by removing the excess shadow underneath the brow bone”,
says Sir John. Finish with mascara.

The makeup artist: Michael Ashton @michaelashton
Other celeb clients: Lea Michele, Hilary Swank

How-to:

#1 / Using a black gel liner and tapered eyeliner brush, start by outlining the shape of the eye, working from the inner to outer corner.

#2 / Work the product right into the root of the lashes and gradually build up thickness on the outer three-quarters (don’t wing just yet).

#3 / Paint over the gel with a waterproof liquid liner that has a precision tip. “It’s key to achieving intensity,” says Ashton.

#4 / To create the wing, flick the liquid liner out towards your temple. Finish with false lashes and mascara.

PRO TIP: “Reduce pressure on the brush as you wing the liner – this creates a precise line that gently fades away.” – Michael Ashton, makeup artist
