The nail colours you’ll be wearing in spring

Nail Trend Report: Spring Summer 2017

Or get a head start and paint your nails in these shades now

marie claire Contributor / August 31 2017

Instead of picking up a plain pastel polish in the coming season, experiment with bright hues, shimmering shades and wearable art. These are the go-to nail trends as spotted backstage at the Spring/Summer 2017 international fashion shows.

Crayola colours

The trend: If neutrals aren’t your thing, perk up your wardrobe with one of these hot-right-now shades.

Top tip: Nail prep is essential with these punchy hues; that means smoothing your nail edges, applying a base coat (to prevent discolouration) and a top coat with UV filters (to prevent fading). Commit to regular touch-ups or remove the colour completely when cracks appear.

The new red

The trend: A delicious red number isn’t just the perfect accompaniment to any meal – this season it extends to your nails, too. On the Spring/Summer 2017 runways, nail artists at Kate Spade and Monique Lhuillier traded classic candy-apple reds for deeper, ox blood-esque shades.

Top tip: There’s something edgy about this wintry red, and according to Jin Soon Choi, founder of JINsoon Nail Lacquer and Gigi Hadid and Karlie Kloss’s manicurist, it’s a “timeless colour that transcends trends”. Be sure to keep nails glossy and chip-free.

Glitter paint

The trend: Luminosity dominated the fashion coming down the season’s runways, so it was no surprise that it also showed up on the model’s nails. However, glitter manis got a grown-up makeover with subtle hints of shine on tips and ends and just a slight glimmer over solid shades.

Top tip: “Keep your glitter sophisticated by going minimalistic,” recommends Choi. “Try a classic nude mani with a simple stripe of gold down the centre of a few nails, or wear gold over the top of an opaque colour.”

Neutrals that pop

The trend: Nail colours don’t come more wearable than this: solid, opaque colours in easy shades from sheer nude and pink to greige and crisp white. On the runway, pared-down nudes kept nails fresh and refined at Vera Wang while pink hues worked with feminine cuts and vibrant prints at Temperley London.

Top tip: How do you find the perfect neutral? Consider your skin tone and try before you buy. “Your perfect match will make your skin look lively and fresh,” Choi advises. A high-shine finish keeps this colour modern.

TREND ALERT: Whoever said nail art was over didn’t head backstage this season. Loud, geometric-inspired prints featured at Christian Siriano; things got playful at Proenza Schouler with freehand squiggles; and it was all about monochrome at Betty & Veronica.
