The steps to nailing the perfect burgundy makeup look

The colour that’s not as scary as you think

A statement lip has always been (and will always be) a classic go-to that can be worn to amp up your day-to-day look for a night out, or teamed with an intense eye look for added drama. And while you can never go wrong with a bold red, chic burgundy tones have become one of the hottest makeup trends to try this season.

To find out how to master the look and the important things to avoid when wearing it, we spoke to National Education and Special Events Manager for Estée Lauder, Nica Marcello, who revealed all.

1

Start with your lips

Once base makeup has been applied, apply a burgundy lip colour. Start at the outer part of your lip and dragthe colour towards the centre. “As with any strong lipstick you want to use a lip brush so you can actually get a defined look,” says Marcello.

Marcello also recommends “pressing your lips together to help give you the natural guide of where to apply your lipstick afterwards.” From there, simply fill in the rest of the lip, making sure not to go over the natural shape of the lip too much.

Fill in your brows

According to Marcello, well-defined brows are essential in balancing out such a bold lip. To perfect the look, she recommends using a brow gel, which will allow quick application while tinting and shaping at the same time. To ensure each hair is coated evenly, Marcello suggests applying “the product in upwards strokes all the way through the brow and use the tip to help tame the top of the brows down.”

Add some shadow

While most people would avoid applying burgundy shades to the eyes as well as the lips, Marcello says using similar shade will complement the look and take it to the next level. But to ensure you don’t go over the top with the colour on your lids, she suggests concentrating a shimmering shade “onto the middle [of the eyelid] because it’s really going to make the eyes pop,” before adding a light-wash of a deeper burgundy shade to the outer corner of the eye, close to the lash line.

TOP TIP: If you have redness around your eyes, be sure to use a yellow-based concealer to cover it.

4

Define your lashes

Finally, skip the eyeliner and move straight onto mascara. Just make sure to coat each lash from root to tip for maximum impact and drama.
