3 ways to adjust your makeup routine as you age

Expert tips to follow

As we get older, it’s important to not only adjust your skin care regimen, but your makeup, too. Napoleon Perdis shares his recommendations for a face-flattering finish.

1

Prime time

There’s a reason why Perdis created his “Not to prime is a crime!” catchcry: “Primers hydrate, brighten, calm and smooth the skin, and are essential to giving the appearance of a youthful complexion,” he says. If you think this pre-foundation step is just for your cheeks, chin and forehead, think again. Perdis advocates priming your lips and eyes, too. Try Napoleon Perdis’ cult product, Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Skin Primer.

2

Steer clear of shimmer

For fresh, younger looking eyes, it’s best to avoid glitter and iridescent eyeshadow. “They have a tendency to sit in fine lines and emphasise every area of the skin that isn’t smooth,” says Perdis. Instead, he recommends opting for products with a matte finish, which can have an almost blurring effect, disguising fine lines. We love Clarins Ombre Matte Eye Shadow.

3

Invest in quality makeup

Just as it’s important to choose skin care that’s tailored to your skin type and concerns, so too is makeup with nourishing properties. “To achieve a healthier complexion that is even in tone, your skin care and makeup should contain beneficial ingredients, such as chamomile to soothe redness,” says Perdis. Antioxidants are also helpful additions to protect skin from free radical damage. Try Maybelline New York Superstay Better Skin Foundation - the Actyl-C formula improves skin’s appearance after three weeks of use.
