Australia’s most popular celebrity beauty look searches are surprisingly confronting

Food for thought

A recent trend report from Australian beauty website Recreate Yourself has revealed the most popular celebrity beauty looks searched by our fellow Aussies. And it's safe to say the results have proven to be quite revealing...

The report highlights the top 10 most searched Australian celebrities who are obviously loved by all (ourselves included) but they also happen to all be white women.

While we’re not arguing that these women are all extremely relevant, beautiful, incredible, etc., this report has shed light on a long-standing issue of racial bias in this country. It is honestly a shock to still see that Eurocentric standards of beauty are still so prevalent in the Australian beauty landscape when we consider that the call for diversity has been loud and clear on a global scale.

As we discussed with our digital issue cover star Maria Thattil earlier this year, growing up in a multicultural country that retains monolithic beauty ideals can be incredibly damaging for young Australian women who do not fit into the very limited portrayals of women they see in the media.

The subliminal messaging present in mainstream Australian media regarding racial bias is made evident in these revealing studies where we are finally allowed to see how people interpret beauty on a personal scale and who they gravitate to based on these standards.

Hearing from fellow Australian women like Thattil and seeing reports like the one conducted by RY.com.au are so important in understanding the insidious ways in which racial bias is harming generations of young Australian women (and men for that matter).

This is an important, albeit uncomfortable conversation that we, as Australians, need to have.

Something we're all obsessed with down under? Skin care. These are Australia’s most popular skin care brands.

Since then, her keen interest in fashion and beauty has landed her gigs as a Digital Content Producer and Beauty Editor with titles like Girlfriend, Refinery29, BEAUTYcrew and beautyheaven. She loves the way seemingly innocuous topics like skin care and style have the ability to put a smile on people’s faces or make them think about themselves a little differently. A big believer in self love and experimentation, Briar has made a point of becoming the Australian beauty industry’s unofficial guinea pig for unusual treatments and daring hair trends. When she’s not testing out the latest beauty launches, Briar is big on broadening her horizons, mostly in the form of food but she’s also partial to travelling to new destinations both near and far (and of course, allocating an extra bag to bring their best beauty offerings home with her).
