Exclusive: the singer is seriously obsessed with beauty

Beauty Crew Beauty Editor / September 15 2017

She may only be 20 years old but Pia Mia has more than a few successes under her belt already. Her pop singles ‘Do It Again’, ‘Touch’, and her latest single ‘I’m A Fan’ are making waves on international radio stations, she has just under five million Instagram followers, and her latest ambassador role with mark. (new and sister brand of Avon) has cemented her stature in the beauty world. We recently sat down with the singer in an exclusive interview to find out more about her favourite products, hair changes, and more.

On her hair colour changes…
“I was blonde for six years and I loved it, I went through like every phase of being blonde. I was ombré first, then I did highlights, then I was platinum, so I kind of did everything in the blonde realm that could possibly be done. But I wanted to go back to brown just to let my hair take a break and be healthy. A few weeks ago I went red as well, it was a custom hair colour where it  was an eight hour process and we mixed seven different colours!”

On how she does her makeup now that she has brown hair…
“I think when I was blonde and I would wear pink it looked super, almost Barbie-ish, which isn’t really my vibe at all. But with brown hair I can definitely wear more pinks.”

On her role with mark.…
“I’m so excited that mark. named me ambassador, I love to be part of things from the beginning and getting to watch them grow. I just love the mark. brand; I think it’s really cool. The message is about being bold, being different, being unique, not being afraid to express your artistic side. And I love a bold eye, bold lash or lip so I think that’s something that mark. really allows you to do.”

On her favourite makeup products…

“You’ll always see me in a good red lip. mark. does a really nice red lip and we have a bunch of different shades, too; [there are] different reds for different skin tones. But I think always mascara, always lipstick and then I think you’ll always need a flawless foundation. You gotta have a good base.”

On her best makeup tip…
“Sometimes less is more. You don’t have to cake makeup on your face if you want to do something bold - you don’t have to go crazy with it.”

On staying fit…
“I love working out, it makes me feel so confident. I was doing Krav Maga, which is self defence street fighting. Then Floyd Mayweather saw my video and told me to go to his boxing guy in LA so then I got into boxing. I’m such a fan of him, I thought it was so cool. I think Pilates is really good, too. Working out, I think it’s important to make it fun - not just like ‘ugh I gotta go to the gym’.”

On staying sane while being on tour…
“I’m from the island of Guam so I always have my family around me, I don’t travel without a family member. It's either one of my cousins who lives with me or one of my siblings. I always have someone from my family which I think is really important [for] making sure you take the time out that you need. If you’re tired, take a break. Don’t overwork yourself, don’t kill yourself because [it’s] supposed to be fun.”

On looking confident on camera…
“I think having a good makeup job is good and that always boosts confidence. Then just good lighting and good angles. I don’t take pictures if I don’t want to so I think you’ve gotta be in the mood.”
