How To Prep Your Skin Correctly This Summer

It’ll ensure your makeup will last all day long

From humidity in the air to the sheer heat Australian summers bring, it’s inevitable the longevity of your makeup is going to be challenged. That’s why it’s essential to take the time to prep your skin correctly, so your makeup stays put for longer. “Prepping your skin before makeup will ensure that it goes on evenly and stays on all day,” explains Alphie Sadsad, National Artistry Lead of Sephora Australia. “The better your skin looks from the start, the better your makeup will look.” You don’t have to tell us twice! Here are the rules to prepping your skin correctly this summer.

1

Cleanse correctly

It may sound silly, but your cleanser is key to boosting the longevity of your makeup as it can effectively remove debris, dirt and excess sebum, and give you that clean canvas you want. “FRESH Soy Face Cleanser is great for all skin types,” says Sadsad. “Don’t forget to use a FOREO (such as LUNA 3) in circular motions to give the cleanser time to work. Then, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.”

2

Smooth the surface

To eliminate uneven texture on your face, go for a chemical exfoliant, such as Sephora Collection Glow Peel Pads. “These contain gentle glycolic peptides to exfoliate and prep skin for serums and the like,” continues Sadsad. “This would be the most important step for a flawless base because, if you don’t take the time to do this step, you’re just putting products on dead skin.”

3

Get hydrated

Whether or not you have dry skin as a skin type, your face is going to be parched this season due to higher temperatures. “Adding a serum can help to add a little extra moisture to your skin,” explains Sadsad. “Look for serums like Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II or Alpha-H Vitamin E with Macadamia Serum that contain antioxidants, along with vitamin C, E, and hyaluronic acid.” Then, follow with a moisturiser to keep the hydration locked in.

4

Add a primer

Now you’ve nailed your skin care routine to help boost the longevity of your makeup, it doesn’t hurt to get a bit of help from the makeup department too. “Applying a primer prepares your skin for anything you are going to put on it,” says Sadsad. “There are so many different primers to choose from that can suit your needs, such as hydrating, colour-correcting and oil-controlling.”
