This face mist smells exactly like Rihanna (and other beauty lessons we learnt from her makeup artist)

All hail Priscilla Ono

Digital Beauty Editor / January 20 2021

If you asked us to name the top two people we’d want to quiz for beauty advice, we’d have crystal clear choices: Rihanna, and Rihanna’s makeup artist.

And if you’ve ever watched a Met Gala red carpet (the stained glass makeup, ladies and gentleman), laid eyes on a Fenty campaign, or scrolled Priscilla Ono’s enviable Insta feed, you’ll certainly understand why.

Yep, as Rihanna’s go-to glam girl and Fenty Beauty's Global Makeup Artist, Ono is obviously a total trailblazer in the industry, and has created some of the freshest, coolest and most revolutionary makeup moments of all time. FYI, this feels like the right time to mention the bucket hat and silver lips look…

So, if you’re with us in our obsession (and we have no doubt that you are), here are the tips, tricks and of course, the tea that Ono was kind enough to share with us...

How she preps her skin for makeup

ICYMI, Fenty just dropped a powder foundation that's set to shake up the game entirely (that's kind of their thing). But before you dry skin types go doubting it, Ono wants to make something very clear: this powder works for everyone.

"I have dry skin, [whereas] Rihanna has extremely oily skin, so I usually like to prep the skin [before applying powder foundation] a little differently depending on skin type. People have a misconception that you can only use a powder foundation if you have oily skin, but that’s not true. Any skin type can wear a powder foundation; it’s all about how you prep the skin."

"For Rihanna, I usually like to go in and cleanse her skin of any oil, using a micellar water or toner. Then I go in with some moisturiser, and I do something more lightweight so it’s not too heavy for her. Then I always like to take primer – [I use] the Pro Filt’r Mattifying Primer on Ri," she explained.

The steps are the same for a drier skin type; it's just about favouring hydrating products over mattifying ones. "For me, because I have dry skin, my prep is a little different. I also cleanse my skin, but after that I use a cream, which is a thicker consistency, and then sometimes I use an oil or serum to really hydrate. I do also use a primer, but I like to use a hydrating primer [instead]," Ono shared.

The face mist that smells exactly like Rihanna

Ono likes to seal her powder with a hydrating face mist – one that she says happens to smell exactly like Rihanna herself. “If you’ve ever heard of anyone that’s met Rihanna, you’ll know the first thing they say is “Oh my god, Rihanna smells so good. She smells amazing.” Honestly, every time I smell this, I’m like "that’s the epitome of what she smells like".

"When Lil Nas X said "Rihanna smells amazing", and you were wondering what she smells like, she smells like this.” The product she’s referencing? Fenty’s own setting spray. Basically, you'll come for its skin-refreshing, makeup-sealing abilities, but you'll stay for the fresh, crisp and surprisingly modern rose scent. The floral vibe makes sense too, seeing as her actual signature scent also happens to feature rose. We swear Rihanna can make anything cool again.

The out-of-the-box concealing product she swears by

“[I like to use a concealer in] a peachy-pink shade, [because] that actually really helps with my dark circles. I don’t want my under eyes to look too light. If I use a really light concealer under my eyes, I feel like it makes my under eyes look more grey because of that darkness that I have there. The peachy-pink colour neutralises that darkness and makes it go away."

"I do this for Rihanna as well – I love using the Peach Match Stix on her; the matte version looks beautiful on her skin tone. She’s usually between a 300 and a 340 [shade in foundation] and the peach is just always perfect no matter what shade of foundation she is."

How she chooses a lip look

"Rihanna’s a chameleon and she just loves different makeup looks. I don’t remember a time where she's [been] like, “Oh, can you do the same look that you did that time?” She’s always like “I want something me, I want something different, I want something new, can you come up with something different?” She’s always changing," Ono revealed.

"Sometimes she wants to be more punk, sometimes she wants to be more feminine and girly, [and] sometimes she wants to be more tomboy. It really just depends on her mood and her outfit, [so] we have a lip colour and formula for any [one]."

"If she wants to be fresh, she’ll probably do a Gloss Bomb or a Sheer Shiny Lipstick. If she wants a little more colour and she wants to be really sexy, she’ll probably want a Gloss Bomb Cream, which is basically Gloss Bomb with a little bit of pigment in it. It helps to give that really sexy mouth – she calls it ‘latex lips’. She just wants the lips to look like latex and really yummy, and that’s exactly [the finish] this gives you."

Well then, it's safe to say we know the lip look we'll be trying tomorrow. Rihanna sparking inspiration? How out of character...
