The edgy red eyeliner trend is set to heat up your makeup this summer

Even Rihanna’s on board with this one

Red eyeliner is quickly becoming the new ‘it girl’ makeup trend.

The term has been particularly potent over at Pinterest, with the digital dreamboard platform reporting a 40 percent increase in searches for ‘red eyeliner’ in the past month alone.

And now, even Rihanna has jumped on board, using the FENTY BEAUTY Flypencil Longwear Pencil Eyeliner in ‘Cherry Punk’ ($33 at Sephora) to create a punk-inspired reverse cat eyeliner look for the Fenty Beauty Instagram:

But as much as we’re all for trying new makeup looks when the silly season rolls around (heck we’ve even stockpiled a truckload of glitter to help us nail this year’s party season makeup looks) – red is a really hard colour to pull off when it comes to eye makeup.

That’s why we’ve scoured the far corners of Instagram to bring you some wearable red eyeliner looks (and some more creative options for the bold types among us).

Plus, you can forget reading hundreds of online reviews trying to find the perfect red eyeliner formula because we’ve found a few options that would fit nicely into your makeup kit (you’re welcome).

Keep it wearable

If you’re attempting to insert a pop of red eyeliner into your everyday makeup, then we suggest sticking to classic application techniques that you’re used to using with your favourite pencil or liquid eyeliner formulations.

Rim the edges of your peepers with a blast of cherry red colour, dabble in a bit of floating liner or create an angled cat eye by extending your line drawing skills to the inner corner.

Make it edgy

When it comes to playing with red eyeliner, the great news is that the standout hue makes for excellent freehand drawing fodder.

Get creative with shapes and design butterfly-esque wings, imitate some faux lashes under the eye or pair the bright shade with a contrasting (or complementary) colour if you’re feeling bold.
