VIDEO: Anti-ageing trends you need to know

Move over Botox. Cosmetic dermatology has come a long way

I’m often amazed when I discover the ages of some of Hollywood’s leadings ladies. Many of the women in their 40s and 50s don’t look a day over 30. The reason isn’t just that they’re genetically blessed, but the trends and advancements in cosmetic procedures have changed. Today, it’s all about multiple subtle cosmetic procedures that tackle a range of concerns - think pigmentation, wrinkles, redness and loss of volume - rather than a full on facelift or an overdose on Botox.

Here are two of the biggest anti-ageing trends right now and how you can achieve similar results at home.

The trend: laser resurfacing

It’s often overlooked, but one of the first things to give away your age is your skin’s tone and that’s why laser has become one of the biggest trends in cosmetic dermatology. It refreshes the texture of the skin and is often the first port of call if you’re looking to address early signs of ageing.

It works by dispersing light energy below the skin to stimulate your natural collagen and to rejuvenate skin cells below the surface to help smooth the creases that cause wrinkles and scars.

There’s some pain and inflammation and you’ll probably want to go into hiding over the following few days as the redness subsides, the skin darkens and then sheds away to reveal a more even tone and less wrinkles.

At-home alternative:

Not willing to take things that far but looking to address tone and wrinkles? Then consider an at home alternative, such as L’Oréal’s Revitalift Laser X3 Serum and Moisturiser. According to L’Oréal Paris, clinical studies have proven that it challenges the results of a laser session thanks to concentrated active ingredients including fragmented hyaluronic acid and pro-xylane, which work to visibly correct lines and plump up the skin. Day and night, apply the serum to cleansed skin; wait about a minute so the serum has time to penetrate and then apply the moisturiser.

The trend: filler

Overtime, our face loses volume as collagen levels decline. The current cosmetic trend to combat this is with fillers.

A clear gel made up of complex sugar molecules are strategically injected to areas that need the volume restored, such as into wrinkles, skin folds - like those around the mouth - and lips. The results of this procedure, last around 6-12 months, and while there’s no downtime, expect some mild tenderness for a few days.

At-home alternative:

If you’re not quite ready to take that step but are looking to restore the volume in your skin, then consider L’Oréal’s Revitalift Filler [HA] Serum and Moisturiser. Both contain hyaluronic acid – an incredible plumping ingredient that can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. In these products, the hyaluronic acid has been fragmented, which means that it can be better absorbed into the skin for an even better result. To restore volume and hydration, use the duo morning and night.
