6 ways to exfoliate your way to softer, smoother skin

From cloths to coffee scrubs, there’s something for everyone

Just like exfoliating your face is essential for clear, glowing skin, it’s important to pay the same attention to your body, too. Not only will a scrub leave you with smoother and brighter-looking skin, the process can actually help your body products work harder. “By exfoliating skin, we are removing dead skin cells, and thus allowing products to penetrate much deeper into the skin,” says facialist Tilly Barnett and owner of No. 13 The Beauty Avenue. “Another great bonus to exfoliating is increasing blood flow and circulation, leading to healthy glowing skin. I recommend doing it once to twice a week, followed straight after by a body moisturiser for maximum absorption.”

Basically, body exfoliation is a no-brainer. Follow this guide to discover a few of the different methods you can try and the products to stock up on.

1

With cloths

Exfoliating cloths are a great way to smooth skin without actually having to get into the shower. Alpha-H Liquid Gold Resurfacing Body Cloths are soft wipes (they almost look like makeup remover wipe) that feature a textured side to physically buff skin, as well as glycolic acid-infused formula to chemically exfoliate.

2

With pads

Obsessed with Santé by Enjo Makeup Removers? Us too. Santé’s Body Glove is a larger version of the remover discs, and features an exfoliating side, so you can cover off more skin surface when sloughing away those dead skin cells. To use, slip your hand inside, wet your skin, and buff away.

3

With coffee

Not only is ground coffee a natural physical exfoliant, it’s can also temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite when rubbed on skin in circular motions. Thankyou Botanical Geranium & Rosewood Coffee Body Scrub features this wonder ingredient, as well as macadamia oil to soften and nourish. If you prefer to keep your granules in a neat body soap bar, try Coffee Bar Coffee Scrub Exfoliator - the Caramel Espresso one smells as delicious as it sounds, and the bar works a treat to smooth skin.

4

With a mitt

You can’t go past a handy (no pun intended) mitt or glove when it comes to exfoliating your body. Biology’s No.001 Exfoliating Body Mitt is made with natural plant fibres of hemp to scrub away dead skin cells. Before using, wet it with water (or just use it in the shower), and rub in small circular motions.

5

With a hand treatment

Your hands require special attention as the skin there is more delicate and thinner than the rest of your body. Jurlique Exfoliating Hand Treatment features jojoba beads to refine the texture of your skin, and red and white clay to draw out impurities. Work a thin layer all over your hands, leave for five minutes, then use water to emulsify the product. Rinse, then follow with a hand cream to restore moisture.

6

With an exfoliating balm

You can’t go wrong with an in-shower exfoliator that’s made with tiny ground-up rosehip seeds, as found in Trilogy Exfoliating Body Balm. Pop a tablespoon sized amount into your hands, and rub into damp limbs to soften and smooth skin.
