Heat and outdoor events make summer makeup a chore. Celebrity makeup artist and co-creator of Mikatvonk Makeup, Jay Jay Rauwenhoff, shares her tips for nailing glowy, natural makeup, and a step-by-step guide for getting the look:

Tip #1 / Keep it simple

“Make this your summer beauty mantra!” says Rauwenhoff. Summer is the season for embracinga natural-looking glow. You want your natural skin to shine through. “The ‘no makeup’ makeup look requires makeup! It’s getting the balance right and using natural, subtle tones – that is key to pulling off a natural finish,” says Rauwenhoff.

Tip # 2 / Lighten up

Swap your heavy foundation for a lighter option. “That doesn’t mean that you need to step out the door with nothing on your skin. Use a tinted moisturiser or, dilute your foundation with a little moisturiser to make your own,” says Rauwenhoff. If you have a dry skin type or mature skin, this tip can help through any season. For those with oily skin, Rauwenhoff recommends mixing your foundation with primer instead, for sheer, longer-lasting coverage.

1

Base

For glowing, dewy summer skin, your new bestie is primer. “A good primer is like sanding a wooden floor. It creates a smoother, less porous surface.” Try Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Primer.

2

Brows

The current brow trend is natural, but still defined. Rauwenhoff’s tip: “make sure your eyebrow pencil isn’t too dark. Use a dry kohl pencil because they only deposit a light amount of colour.” Try Mikatvonk Auto Eyebrow Pencil.

3

Cheeks

“It’s all about a fresh pop of colour on cheeks this summer,” says Rauwenhoff. Create the perfect flush with a cream blush instead of powder. Apply with your ring finger and dab the colour on the apples of the cheeks. Try Luma Just A Touch Lip And Cheek Tint.

Lips

When it’s hot, a bright lipstick can be high maintenance. Add a clear or lightly tinted gloss, “with not too much shimmer – you want dewy shine,” says Rauwenhoff. Try Frank Body Send Nude Lip Tint.

Eyes

On eyes, opt for pretty pastels or nudes for a subtle wash. “Bronze and taupe are the two colours every girl should have.” Try Maybelline New York The Blushed Nudes Shadow Palette.

6

Definition

Maximise your glow. Create definition by highlighting the high points including cheekbones and the nose bone. “Use a fresh orange or champagne-toned highlighter if you have a medium or warm skin tone, or a pearl-toned highlighter if you have fair skin.”
Try Revlon Photoready Insta-Fix Highlighting Stick.

7

Contour

With a matte bronzer, lightly contour the top of the forehead (where it meets the hairline) and around the temples. “As well as creating a subtle, warm depth of colour to define the face, using bronzer here instantly makes your eyes pop that little bit more,” says Rauwenhoff. Try Natio Mineral Pressed Powder Bronzer.
