Why you should be asking your hairdresser for a 'sliced bob' this summer

The modern woman’s cut

The bob is one of those hairstyles that everyone and their grandma has dabbled with.

Designed to flatter a multitude of face shapes, the bob can literally be interpreted a myriad of ways depending on the wearer (heck, we’ve even created a go-to guide on how to find the right bob for your face shape for just that reason).

We’ve enjoyed the lob (a play on words meaning ‘long bob’ for those of you out of the loop) for many seasons, just recently been introduced to the bixie cut (a playful combo of the pixie and bob hairstyles), and taken inspiration from every single celebrity bob that’s graced our Instagram feed, too.

But now, we’re having our brains reprogrammed to make room for another uber chic, summer-approved bob style, known formally as the ‘sliced bob’ (and we couldn’t be more excited to get acquainted with her TBH).

Characterised by a sharp-edged finish, this new bob trend removes the need for excessive layering. It literally looks like you followed in Mulan’s formidable footsteps and took a sharp-edged blade to your strands.

Before you go running into the kitchen and grab that knife though, we’ve done our due diligence and found some pro advice on how to successfully pull off this look for summer.

A-list hairstylist Harry Josh implores those interested in this blunt-edged bob to “go to a great haircutter” as it’s a bit more complicated to pull off than it looks. “It's ever so slightly longer at the front and almost A-line,” he explained in an interview with Allure.

“If you have finer hair, this helps create a cleaner line,” he went on to say. But it’s also a great option for curlier hair types too, as it plays up natural texture quite nicely.

When it comes to styling, Josh recommends playing up the sharp-edged style with a straight finish: “If your hair is already straight, don't worry, you won't have to do anything, [but] if it's wavy, blow-dry it and flat iron it." This way you’ll get a more pronounced ‘sliced’ effect.

Another hair trend taking Hollywood by storm? The ‘wolf cut’ hair trend is set to be the haircut of the season.
