5 superfood ingredients for better skin
They’re good for you, inside and out

When it comes to eating healthy, you don’t think twice about adding a shot of turmeric to your juice, kale to a salad or a handful of blueberries atop porridge. But what about slapping said ingredients on your face via your skin care products? Yep, get with the skin care program - it turns out that your body’s biggest organ can also benefit from a superfood serving to boost its health, address fine lines and dial up radiance.
On the menu: Don’t underestimate this native ingredient – boasting up to 100 times more vitamin C than an orange, it contains the highest recorded amount of any fruit in the world. “Kakadu plum also has a unique combination of hydrophilic (water-soluble) and lipophilic (oil-soluble) antioxidants, which can deliver comprehensive protection while improving luminosity and skin tone,” explains Emma Hobson, Education Manager for the International Dermal Institute and Dermalogica.
Try it in: Dr Roebuck’s Daintree AHA Brightening Mask. Kakadu plum works to brighten the skin’s surface, whilst the addition of caviar lime (which is a natural exfoliator) can improve texture.
On the menu: That green stuff in your crisper is rich in vitamins A, C and K, which encourage skin cell renewal, and is also packed with lutein to support collagen production. “[Kale] is reputed by some skin care manufacturers to help reduce dark circles under the eyes, [while the] collagen production [would] result in decreased lines and wrinkles, tightening and detoxifying the skin,” says Hobson.
Try it in: Youth To The People Superfood Face Wash. This brings together kale, spinach and green tea to deeply cleanse without stripping the skin of moisture.
On the menu: They may be tiny in size, but these babies are powerhouses of vitamins A, B6, C and E to nourish, as well as folate for healthy skin cell production. “The vitamin A will assist in normalising the skin’s functions, working to get it in a healthy state,” adds Hobson.
Try it in: Sunday Riley Juno Essential Face Oil. This lightweight formula features cold-pressed blueberry to plump and protect.
On the menu: Your reg ol’ orange carrots carry beta-carotenes, a form of vitamin A, but the purple variety contains even higher levels. For skin, this spells improved cell turnover (that’s the thing behind the ‘glow’) and a healthier complexion. “Purple carrots also contain antimicrobial and antiseptic properties, which are beneficial for those suffering from breakouts,” explains Hobson. Even more reason to hit up the farmers’ market.

On the menu: This punchy wellness favourite is a top anti-inflammatory ingredient that can kill bacteria and reduce swelling of large pores, as well as calm irritated skin. “Plus, it’s a terrific antioxidant and said to help combat UV-induced skin ageing,” notes Hobson. Just try not to get the actual spice on your hands. You’ll thank us later.
