If you thought the contouring trend was showing signs of slowing down, think again. In fact, for all intents and purposes the technique is actually expanding beyond makeup application and moving into the world of cosmetic surgery.

According to RealSelf Trends – a website that shares statistics and patterns in cosmetic surgery, dermatology, dentistry and other elective treatments – cosmetic surgery is being increasingly used by millennials to create perfectly contoured and defined faces through two procedures known as Buccal Fat Removal and Dimpleplasty.

Buccal Fat Removal is a procedure that removes excess fat from the lower cheeks to give them a more defined look, while Dimpleplasty is a minimally invasive surgical treatment whereby small incisions are made in the mouth to create dimples.

RealSelf Trends spoke to several American plastic surgeons to find out more about the emerging trend, and according to Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Sheila Nazarian, the age of selfies is a leading cause for the rise in popularity of this procedure as “women care more about small changes to their face that can improve their overall image.”

“I perform a Dimpleplasty about once every two months…the procedure is most popular among women in between the ages of 20-30,” Nazarian explained.

Another Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Dr. Brent Moelleken echoed this sentiment explaining, “Buccal Fat Removal is a little-known procedure, [but I] perform the surgery about three times a month. When people hear they don’t have to live with the chipmunk cheeks that make them look like their older family members, they are excited and get the word out.”

Moelleken also noted that unlike fillers, “very few doctors know how to reverse the effects of Buccal Fat Pad Removal, so it is generally an irreversible process."
