How to get creative with lipstick according to 4 makeup artists

Fresh takes on a makeup classic

BEAUTYcrew Beauty Editor / July 29 2022

As far as makeup goes, there’s nothing quite as classic as a bullet of red lipstick.

Its popularity has spanned generations, evolving with each decade to cater to the modern needs of the people wearing it.

But, in all honesty, when it comes to our everyday makeup we’re less inclined to paint our pout scarlett, in lieu of more wearable options like a lip balm or lip gloss

But if you think we’re giving up and throwing the baby out with the proverbial bathwater, you’ve got another thing coming.

Rather than leaving your favourite tube of red lipstick in the bottom of your bag to waste away until it’s inevitable expiry date, we’re handing the mic to professional makeup artists for their tips on ways to get creative with the stuff. Here’s what they had to say…

Heidi Scarlett King

“I've always been a multi-use makeup artist for as long as I remember and prefer the cream and liquid textures,” King explains. “So the humble lipstick (in particular liquid lipstick) is my go-to for liquid eyeshadow and cheek shades.”

Alphie Sadsad

“Lipsticks are one item that I use a lot of,” Sadsad admits. “I press it on the eyelid to add that creamy wash of colour or use it to stick glitter or gems, on the cheeks for blush, or as a lip tint by pressing it on with your finger.”

But Sadsad says the multi-use doesn’t end there, “I also use lipsticks to correct pigmentation under a foundation or concealer.” Genius.

Shella Martin

“Lipstick for me is definitely not just reserved for lips,” says Martin. “It’s used anywhere I need cream shades quickly. It brings life to cheeks & glosses lids in seconds.”

Surprisingly, Martin admits she uses it more than any other makeup products in her kit, “I can confidently say I use more lipstick over foundation creating most of my looks.”

Kevin In The City

“I love to use liquid lipsticks almost like paint,” says Sydney’s glitter king. “The formula and quality of some of these lipsticks is so good, they literally last forever.”

Use a “red liquid lip to draw a little heart on the cheek, or in my case a black liquid lip to draw animal print on my temples,” he advises. “Using liquid lipstick as basically a boujee face paint is the way to go!”
