Face masks are not new, but they sure are on *everyone’s* faces right now. Thank the K-beauty stamp of approval or the Instagram factor, but face masks have become a very popular trend. And really, it’s nothing but good news for your skin. Because masks are nutrient-rich and determined to make your skin look and feel better.
A skin care step we should all be doing once a week - minimum, a mask can help address pretty much any skin concern, depending on what formula you choose to slather on your face.
While there are hundreds of incredible face masks to choose, a homemade face mask can sometimes be more cost efficient, convenient and well, satisfying! And the best part is a quick peek in your pantry and fridge will probably reveal everything you need to make one.
Learning how to make a homemade face mask is so simple, and once you get the hang of it you can easily customise your recipe to suit your skin’s needs (or what’s in your kitchen!).
Honey - antibacterial, nourishing, naturally healing and promotes collagen building
Lemon - a natural acid that exfoliates dead skin and lightens skin (but use sparingly and always do a patch test first, as it may irritate some skin types)
Avocado - contains skin-nourishing oils
Yoghurt or cow’s milk - rich in lactic acid to fight acne and gently exfoliate
Olive oil - cleans and nourishes skin
How to make a face mask is a cinch once you know the benefits of a few skin-loving ingredients like these (and there are plenty more lurking in your kitchen - so many fruits or vegetables deliver nutrients that your skin needs).
Here are some face mask recipes to get you started:
#1 / A hydrating face mask
For a simple homemade face mask for dry skin, try this recipe. Model Karolina Kurkova shared this moisturising face mask with Grazia (actually, she’s sung its praises in numerous interviews, including a pre-Met Gala video of herself applying the oatmeal and honey face mask!), saying, “When I’m travelling or moving around, oatmeal and honey is a great mask. It’s great for hydration and gives you a nice glow.”
Mask ingredients: Oats and a spoonful of honey
How to make it: Make your oatmeal as you normally would if you were having it for breakfast, honey drizzle and all. Apply it to your face (just make sure it’s not too hot) then leave for 10 minutes. Rinse off.
#2 / A brightening face mask
Another model who’s a fan of mixing her own face mask, Jourdan Dunn uses a turmeric face mask to boost her skin’s glow. In an Instagram story, she shared her homemade mask recipe, which she claims treats acne, fades dark spots, evens out skin tone, reduces dark circles and slows down cell damage. An easy DIY face mask for oily skin, turmeric in the mask helps regulate the production of sebum while the lactic acid in the yoghurt helps balance the skin’s pH level (and is gentle enough for sensitive skin). The citric acid in the lemon works to lighten pigmentation.
Mask ingredients: Turmeric, lemon, honey and yoghurt
How to make it: Mix all the ingredients together to form a paste and apply it liberally to your skin. Leave it on for 10 minutes maximum (turmeric can stain the skin if left on for too long), then wash it off.
#3 / A DIY face mask for glowing skin
Australian nutritionist Jessica Sepel’s avocado and banana face mask is perfect for boosting your skin’s radiance. She shared this DIY mask recipe on her website, noting that avocados are a great source of omega-3, vitamin E and antioxidants, while banana is “full of beta-carotene and potassium, which is fab for fluid retention and under-eye bags”.
Mask ingredients: 1 avocado, 1 tablespoon of manuka honey, juice of half a lemon, 1 mashed banana
How to make it: Mix the ingredients together, pop it on your face and leave it for 20 minutes, then rinse off.
#4 / A revitalising face mask
Former Victoria’s Secret Angel Caroline Trentini shared her go-to recipe for reviving dry, sun-drenched skin in summer with Vogue US. “Us Brazilians love to have a tan, but after the sun, your skin is tired, and you want to have a glow, so this is going to help a lot.”
Mask ingredients: Avocado, pure unsweetened acai, squished strawberries and honey
How to make it: Mash the avocado and strawberries then mix it with the acai and honey. Paste onto the face and leave for 10 minutes. Rinse off.
#5 / A homemade acne mask
Kendall Jenner is not shy about sharing her struggles with acne, and while she could have her pick of any high-end beauty treatment, it seems one of her top fixes for banishing breakouts is her homemade acne mask recipe, which she posted on her website. All you need is egg whites and lemon juice. The egg whites draw out oil from the skin and tighten pores, plus the protein in it helps with skin healing.
Mask ingredients: 2 egg whites, juice of half a lemon (less if you have sensitive skin)
How to make it: Whisk the egg whites and lemon juice with a fork until combined. Apply to the face and leave for 10-20 minutes. Rinse off.
