Dyson has just reinvented the hairdryer

We’re calling it: this is the launch of the year

UPDATE: We have more info on the Australian release of the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer! The innovative tool will set you back $699 and is now available for pre-order here. It will also be available in stores in Myer Melbourne City and David Jones Elizabeth Street (Sydney) from 12pm, 9th July, and other stores from Sunday 10th July.

When you think of hair tools, Dyson isn’t exactly the first brand that would pop into your mind, but as of today the company famous for the vacuum has completely changed how we will look at hairdryers.

Sir James Dyson, owner and founder of the brand mostly known for bag-less vacuums and blade-free fans, has just revealed his latest million-dollar project (which has been in the works for four years): the ‘supersonic’ hairdryer.

Besides offering to feel light and comfortable during use, the dryer promises to feature Dyson’s smallest and lightest motor yet, but will still produce the power needed to thoroughly dry your hair without causing any damage and helping to enhance shine.

More excitingly, there’s word that the motor is near silent – meaning we’ll finally be able to have proper conversations at the hairdresser.

As for the interesting design, the hairdryer works to create a focused ‘jet’ of air, which is specifically angled, for controlled and precise drying and styling.

Other fast facts about the dryer: it features four heat settings, three airflow settings, a cold shot, and interchangeable magnetic heads, meaning you can switch between nozzles and a diffuser with ease.

Dyson said of this venture into the beauty world, “Hair dryers can be heavy, inefficient and make a racket. By looking at them further we realised that they can also cause extreme heat damage to hair. I challenged Dyson engineers to really understand the science of hair and develop our version of a hair dryer, which we think solves these problems.”
