How to fake tan darker skin tones like a pro
If you thought fake tan was only for fairer skin tones, then you can think again.
When used on dark and deep skin tones it can warm up, even and bronze the complexion for a year round glow.
However, there are a few things you need to know before diving head first into the world of self tanning.
BEAUTYcrew sat down with celebrity tanner James Harknett to pick the expert's brain about tanning darker skin tones. And of course we made sure to quiz him on his go-to over the counter products for getting the job done at home if you're unable to schedule a spray tan appointment.
What should dark and deep skin tones look for in a fake tan?
Darker skin tones would benefit from using a fake tan that contains a tinted guide colour - especially ones that have a more olive base, like a professional spray tan A violet base in the guide colour also helps eliminate any orange tones as the tan develops leaving a natural yet dark glow.
Should they only ever use ultra dark fake tan formulas?
Dark and deeper skin tones can choose any DHA based tanner. Just as every skin tone responds differently to the sun, every skin tone responds differently to self-tan. DHA reacts with your skin’s natural chemistry to create a glow that’s uniquely yours. Obviously a stronger product can have a more dramatic effect and help give a holiday colour.
What's the best way to prep darker skin tones for a fake tan?
My tips for the perfect tan start with good old fashioned body prep. A few days before - plan your application of self tanner. Start by smoothing out the skin with an exfoliation. Concentrate on areas that get a build up of cells, such as under the breasts and on strap lines. These are common areas where tan often clings too heavy. Ensure any hair removal is done well before you tan. 24 hours or more is best for shaving. If it’s a leg or body wax then make it 48/72 hours. The skin can then renew evenly and the self tan has enough cells to bind with to allow the tan to react.
Do you have any tips for a natural-looking finish?
A self tanning product or a spray tan can look super natural in darker skin tones if first the correct preparation is given to the skin pre application. For example the main cause of streaking the colour is shaving your legs before applying your self tanner. The tanning agent DHA needs an even layer of cells to bind with and darken. Razors and waxing leave an uneven surface on the skin that contributes to a patchy tanning application, therefore I recommend complete shaving and exfoliation a good 24 hours before tanning.
No areas need to be avoided when applying fake tan. However, I always recommend trialing your chosen product and avoid applying it to the face until you're satisfied with how your tan is reacting. In my experience as a tanning expert I find darker skin tones benefit from avoiding a red based self tan.
What are your go-to fake tan products for dark and deep skin tones?
My go-to tan for darker and deeper skin tones has been Three Warriors for quite some time. Clients have fed back how easy the tinted guide within the tanning mousse ($38.95 from The Iconic) helps them glide the tan on and they can see exactly where they have been, which ensures no blotches or streaks. They have also conveyed how beautiful their skin looks immediately after application. The organic Tasmanian olive oil leaves a glisten on the skin that also feels hydrated and soft. If our skin is not exposed to sunshine through the cooler months it loses colour and can appear sallow and ashen. The Three Warriors Gradual Tan ($34.95 from The Iconic) can start to build colour and leave the skin with a gleam after just one use. It’s also perfect for leaving skin feeling softer, hydrated and glowing.
