Black winged eyeliner is like the LBD of the makeup world. You can never go wrong with a cat-eye - it goes with everything and works for any occasion. But like your favourite LBD, sometimes you need to spice it up and give your look a revamp.
So, what’s the newest take on the beloved winged eyeliner? Well, according to Marc Jacobs Beauty Global Artistry Ambassador Morgane Martini, if you’re looking to amplify your makeup this season, there’s one makeup look you have to try: double eyeliner. It seriously trumps a single flick. Because why wear one shade of eyeliner when you can wear two?
Never heard of double lining? It basically involves applying two wings (one right beside the other) in two different colours. If you’re anything like us and stick to the ol’ classic hues on the daily, this might all sound a bit daunting. But trust us - unlike most trends off the runway, this one is actually doable IRL.
Thinking of giving it a go? Martini shared some of her expert tips and tricks on how to nail the eyeliner look.
Start with a classic cat eye
The first step is to create a classic winged eyeliner look on your upper lid using liquid eyeliner. Simply drag the eyeliner brush from the inner corner of your eye to the outer corner of your eye (using small, short strokes), before adding a flick at the end. We like using NYX Professional Makeup Matte Liquid Eyeliner, because the thin brush makes it easy to apply a precise, fine line.
Pro tip: If your winged flicks are too thick, just use a cotton tip dipped in makeup remover and clean the lines to define them. Easy!
Add another line directly on top
So, you’ve got your classic cat eye – now you’re going to mimic this line and add another line right up against the outer side of the cat eye, this time in a different eyeliner colour. Just draw along the edge of it with your chosen shade and we guarantee it’ll change your look completely. “Layer using [a] metallic shade to add that extra fun for a night look,” suggests Martini. “I like Marc Jacobs Metallic Liquid-Gel Eyeliner in Gold Getter right on top of the Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in 42 Blacquer, or on the inside corner to brighten your eyes.”
Experiment with different shapes and shades
“If you’re more adventurous, you can play with more shades and create fun graphic shapes,” suggests Martini. If you’re looking to try something a little bolder, layer a neon eyeliner over your usual black liner for a pop of colour (try Sephora Collection Fingertip Eyeliner in 08 Metallic Turquoise). If you want to kick it up a notch and play with more sophisticated shapes, try experimenting with a cat-eye shape that connects to your crease line.
Jazz it up
OTT jewelled accessories are optional but encouraged. Martini says, “Go one step further and add a touch of the Marc Jacobs Beauty See-quins Glam Glitter Eyeshadow on the centre of the eyelids for a full-on disco party vibe”. That’s some major New Year’s Eve makeup inspo for you right there!
