Miranda Kerr just revealed the secret to getting abs like a 2000s Victoria’s Secret Angel
We all sat and watched adoringly as all our favourite ‘00s Victoria’s Secret Angels took to the runway, admiring their lip gloss, their blowouts, and naturally, their abs. But what we didn’t clock at the time was that the abs weren’t actually 100% real.
Miranda Kerr has revealed the surprisingly low-fi beauty trick that helped give Victoria’s Secret Angels their famously sculpted physiques backstage: “spray-on abs”. Appearing on LiSTNR’s Vain-ish podcast with hosts Bec Judd and Jess Roberts, the Aussie supermodel candidly reflected on her years as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, including the body-contouring hack used before hitting the runway.
“During the Victoria’s Secret fashion shows, all the girls would all get like a spray tan,” Kerr shared. “And I remember us all getting a spray tan and getting like abs, like our abs defined.” When Judd asked whether the makeup artists used darker spray tan to exaggerate the lines of the stomach, Kerr confirmed the technique.
“Yes, so like where the ab lines are… they’re spraying more abs on,” she laughed. “It’s quite funny when you look back at it, but it kind of works. It’s like makeup contouring for your abs.”
Honestly, it tracks. If contouring can carve out cheekbones and define a jawline, why shouldn’t it work on abs too?
Kerr became Australia’s first Victoria’s Secret Angel in 2007 and walked in six of the brand’s iconic runway shows. While the “spray-on abs” may have helped create the illusion of definition under those blinding runway lights, Kerr also admitted maintaining Angel status involved a seriously disciplined fitness routine.
“Oh yeah! I was an Angel, so I was very consistent with my routine,” she said. “I was doing things that I didn't necessarily love, like running and boxing, whereas I prefer more like yoga and Pilates.”
These days, however, Kerr says her relationship with beauty and her body has shifted dramatically, particularly after becoming a mother. “I feel like it's given me a deeper appreciation for my body and what it's capable of doing,” Kerr explained. “Growing babies, carrying them and giving birth… it just changes your whole perspective.”
She may not feel the pressure to spray abs on anymore (not that she’d ever need to!), and hey, we don't think we'd need it on a daily basis, but it’s good to know the option exists…
