Our own Duckie Thot is the newest face of a global beauty brand
From Australia’s Next Top Model to world domination
It was only five years ago that Sudanese-Australian model Nyadak ‘Duckie’ Thot left Australia for New York to pursue her modelling career. And it seems taking the leap of faith has certainly paid off, with the Melbourne-born 23-year-old being announced as the newest global face for beauty giant L’Oréal Paris.
Duckie has never shied away from sharing how hard modelling was for her, given her Sudanese background – admitting that the colour of her skin made it hard for her to make a name for herself in Australia (hence the move to New York), and how it even meant she’s had to take her own makeup onto set or style her own hair for photo shoots. Thankfully, the industry is changing, and as a L’Oréal Paris beauty ambassador, she’s ready to help be a face of that change.
“I’m honoured to represent L’Oréal Paris, a brand that celebrates infinite ways to be beautiful and makes products for all women. I’m looking forward to helping more girls love the beauty of their dark skin. In my mind, I’m going back in time and telling the young girl I was: ‘Dream big, work hard and trust in yourself girl because one day you’re going to say ‘yes’ to the N°1 beauty brand,” says Duckie.
While Duckie placed third in her series of Australia’s Next Top Model, once she set down in the US, it didn’t take long for her striking looks to be noticed. And by Kim Kardashian, no less.
She told Vogue, “I left a casting in New York and Kim, from Kanye’s team, ran out after me. ‘You have to come upstairs! Kanye will love your look!’ she cried. I didn’t even know Kanye was in the same building! I followed her to see what was up and ended up shooting a magazine cover that day.”
Since then, Duckie’s walked runways around the world, most recently for Le Défilé L’Oréal Paris on the iconic Seine river during Paris Fashion Week SS19 (which, coincidentally, was her debut appearance as L’Oréal Paris’s newest muse).
You can also expect to see her sauntering down the famous Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway in November alongside fellow L’Oréal Paris ambassador Barbara Palvin and Maybelline New York’s ambassador Gigi Hadid.
