Get ready for some serious colour

There’s something incredibly satisfying about being ahead of the curve when it comes to upcoming beauty trends. That’s why we asked Noni Smith, L’Oréal Paris Makeup Director for Australia to give us the inside word on the latest and greatest makeup trends we can all expect to wear this spring and summer.

Parisian nude

While glowing skin and bronze tones are a summer makeup look that will never go out of style, Smith predicts we’ll be experimenting with a similar, albeit more pared-back look this summer. Think sun-kissed in a refined way.

According to Smith, “the trend of the nude face, the Parisian nude – that beautiful, clean, healthy, monochromatic face that pairs bronzes and gold shades with very fresh and quite luminous skin – is a continuing trend as it works really well on everybody.”

If you’re looking to try this look for yourself, Smith suggests pairing a soft bronze or gold eye look with a mineral foundation such as L’Oréal Paris True Match Mineral Foundation as it creates a flawless base while leaving the skin looking natural and smooth.

Sunset vibes

If you’d rather mix up your makeup look this spring and summer then pink, orangey and tangerine eyeshadows will be your friend. “I’ve noticed a lot of tangerine and a lot of pink coming through. Generally there’s been a trend lately for that kind of rusty pinky eye,” Smith revealed.

Not only can this trend be worn by swiping a subtle wash of colour across the lids, it can also be built up to create a dramatic and striking eye look by layering shadows to create a sunset vibe. “I like using an orange shade in the crease, a pink on the lid and a combination of the orange and the pink on the lower lash line before blending them together and kind of fading it out,” Smith explained.

To create this sunset eye makeup look, try Marc Jacobs Eye-Conic Multi-Finish Eyeshadow Palette in Scandalust 740.

Graphic liner

If a bold and statement look is more your cup of tea, then we have good news! According to Smith, graphic liner is – and will continue to be – a huge makeup trend this year. Whether you’re creating a dramatic cat eye, geometrical lines or going nuts and covering the full lid, “there are so many options and variations you’re sure to find something that will suit you,” said Smith.

While graphic liner is certainly more of a traditional nighttime look, Smith says it’s the perfect trend to opt for if you want your makeup to make you feel “edgy, strong, confident and dramatic.”

If you love the idea of the look but are unsure how to pull it off, Smith says the key is to keep the rest of your makeup simple and make sure you add a pop of blush to the cheeks and choose a lip colour that won’t wash you out. For example, Smith recommends a nice soft matte pink or mocha tone on the lips and a peachy blush tone on the apples of your cheeks.

For a graphic liner look we suggest giving shu uemura painting liner or Urban Decay’s Super-Saturated Ultra Intense Waterproof Cream Eyeliner a go.
