11 best BB creams, reviewed
The makeup/skin care hybrids that deserve a prized spot in your beauty routine
Beauty Crew Contributing Editor / September 25 2018
Any budget-conscious, multitask-loving beauty addict can’t live without a BB cream. Dabbling a little in skin care while also fulfilling the role of a foundation, we applaud its commitment to going above and beyond.
What is BB cream?
If you’ve heard the word BB cream thrown around, but are still wondering what is BB cream used for, it’s thankfully pretty simple. Think of it as a tinted moisturiser on steroids. The ‘BB’ stands for beauty balm or blemish balm, which granted isn’t very clear, but what it does is evens out skin tone like a foundation (although is generally more lightweight) while delivering skin-loving benefits that you’d expect from a serum or moisturiser.
GOOD TO KNOW: Originally, BB creams were used by dermatologists post-skin surgery to help mask redness and heal skin at the same time.
What classifies a formula as the best BB cream will differ for everyone, because the point of a BB cream is to combine a couple of your own specific skin needs into one tinted formula.
BB creams are the type of product where you could continually add favourites to your kit, because there are so many good ones and you’ll probably find you need a few to fit your every-changing beauty brief (lacklustre skin today, breakouts tomorrow). To help you get started on your BB cream collection, we’ve compiled our list of the best BB creams in Australia.
#11 / Bobbi Brown BB Cream
Nourished, luminous, less fine, dry lines. Who doesn’t want all those things from their makeup hybrid? We also love the light-reflecting pearls, broad-spectrum sun protection and matte finish. Plus, it was entered into the InStyle Best Beauty Buys Hall of Fame back in 2016 because it’s that good.
The review: “It has a very nice semi-matte (but not dull) coverage. Comfortable to wear and a great SPF protection.” Stella, SUPERcrew member
#10 / The Base LB Cream
When we think about the type of finish we expect from a good BB cream, it’s hard not to picture Lara Worthington and her signature radiance. That’s why we keep going back to this BB cream. It delivers that natural Aussie beauty glow (thanks to the hint of bronzer in the mix) and has a lightweight formula that allows your skin to breathe.
The review: “My favourite BB cream would HAVE to be The Base LB (like BB) cream. Love it to death. Lovely, light, buildable coverage and gives my skin a natural glow. A massive favourite of mine. Not oily and not matte, just the perfect amount of moisture.” Pru, SUPERcrew member
#9 / Rimmel London 9 in 1 Radiance BB Cream
Perk up tired skin with this BB cream. It ticks the box for priming, concealing, protecting from the sun, reducing the appearance of pores, hydrating, awakening and brightening, all with its radiance-enhancing, natural-looking tint. If radiance isn’t what you’re after, it also comes in a matte finish.
The review: “I received the Rimmel BB Cream Radiance 9 in 1 Skin Perfecting SPF20 in marie claire’s The Parcel (which I really miss) a very long time ago and I've had a stash of them ever since. Beautiful coverage, SPF 20, leaves my skin looking radiant, is long-wearing, and doesn't go patchy!” Nicole, SUPERcrew member
#8 / Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream SPF42 PA+++
Who knew you could fit so many great ingredients into one BB cream. In this Missha BB cream there’s hyaluronic acid to keep skin plump and hydrated; ceramide to hold in that valuable moisture from the HA; soothing and anti-inflammatory chamomile extract; and rosemary extract to prevent skin ageing. Throw in high sun protection and your skin is in good hands.
#7 / L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect BB Cream
Radiance – we all want it, and this L’Oréal BB cream delivers it. The lightweight formula fights the signs of ageing with the help of hyaluronic acid and hydrolyzed soy protein while keeping skin ultra nourished and healthy-looking.
The review: “The best BB cream is the L’Oréal Age Perfect BB Cream - it applies easily and quickly with fingers or a sponge and gives a healthy ‘your skin but better’ glow. Coverage is perfect and natural, and can be easily increased with a light dusting of mineral powder.” Kylie, SUPERcrew member
#6 / Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm
In some ways, concealing imperfections is the least impressive thing this Dr. Jart BB cream can do (and for the record, it does that exceptionally well). Its real strength is the serum that’s enriched with antioxidant bio-peptides and adenosine to firm skin and protect it from everyday environmental aggressors.
The review: “As far as BB creams go, this one definitely sits on the fuller coverage side of the spectrum. I love that it gives my skin a soft and natural glowy finishing, without crossing the line over to oily or greasy. The high sun protection is a huge plus for me, too.” Carli Alman, Beauty Crew’s Editor
#5 / Dior Diorskin Nude BB Crème
This Dior BB cream is what rosy, picture-of-health complexions are made of. A dollop will give you brighter skin, lightweight moisturisation, a smoother texture and sheer colour correction, all wrapped up in a fresh glow.
The review: “This would have to be the best BB cream around at the moment. It has that perfect balance of being not too heavy and not too light. It gives a natural look but gives me coverage all day and works well with my other makeup…With the Dior BB cream you feel like you are doing your skin a favour as it contains skin care and SPF.” Fiona, Beauty Crew member
#4 / Maybelline New York Dream Pure BB Cream
Most BB creams are focused on hydrating and evening out your skin tone, but when you have acne-prone skin, you’ve got bigger concerns. This Maybelline BB cream contains two per cent salicylic acid to look after those breakouts, rather than simply covering them up. That’s a big win in our books.
The review: “My all-time favourite is Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream (in Light-Medium), which suits my combination skin perfectly. It has a lightweight texture that glides on well and gives more coverage than your average BB cream to conceal redness and imperfections. It’s non-drying and creates a dewy finish without making my complexion oily. Also love that it contains SPF15 protection and salicylic acid to treat my skin.” Dina, SUPERcrew member
#3 / Olay Total Effects 7 in One Touch of Foundation BB Crème
If fighting the signs of ageing is top of your daily to-do list, this BB cream has you covered. With every application you’re evening out your skin tone all while reaping the seven anti-ageing benefits from its vitamin B3, pro-B5 and E-enriched formula.
The review: “I absolutely adore Olay Total Effects 7 in One Touch of Foundation BB Crème. It gives a lovely light coverage of colour that looks totally natural and is really nourishing and moisturising for my skin. I have sensitive skin and this is perfect. It also never goes oily and comes at a great price for everyday wear – a real winner.” Graeme, SUPERcrew member
#2 / Bourjois Healthy Mix BB Cream
We’ll never say no to makeup that works to hide signs of fatigue. This formula contains a healthy hit of vitamins A, C, E and B5 to pep up your complexion in the AM, and keeps your face all glowy and nourished well into the evening.
The review: “The texture is light, the formula is easy to blend, and it gives skin a really believable-looking glow. What’s not to love about this base?!” Iantha Yu, Beauty Crew’s Beauty Editor
#1 / Garnier BB Cream Original
This is the original Garnier BB Cream (the brand now has five BB creams in their range), and is probably the one that really put BB creams on the map here in Australia. And even now when the market is flooded with BB creams, its still one of our all-time favourites. It has a thick consistency to give you great coverage, but doesn’t feel heavy on the skin. Our favourite thing? The effortless, natural radiance it imparts.
The review: “This is one of the first BB creams I tried and it set a high benchmark from the first application, which is why I go back to it time and time again. It offers the perfect amount of coverage with sun protection for off-duty days and leaves the skin with a beautiful luminosity. Best of all, it’s a steal, so I can add it to my shopping cart without having to think twice about it.” Alex Noonan, Beauty Crew’s Content Director
