The best and most memorable Met Gala beauty looks of all time
They’re always outrageously beautiful

The Met Gala is undoubtedly one of the best red carpet events of the year. Even celebrities who tend to keep their look tame and classic at all other times pull out all the stops to suit the theme and we love to see it.
Typically held on the first Monday of May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City, 2022’s Met Gala will be taking place this year on the 2nd May.
And if you're thinking it doesn't feel that long since 2021's Met Gala, you're not wrong. It was held in September the previous year after delays due to the pandemic (and 2020 missed out altogether).
But it's back to its rightful timing and (we hope) better than ever. Zendaya may not be attending, but we’re still expecting fashion and Hollywood’s finest to bring their absolute A-game.
The theme for 2022? In America: An Anthology of Fashion.
So while we sit and wait to see how our favourite celebrities interpret a late 1800s America, we’re casting our beauty eye back to the Met Gala’s of the past and the jaw-dropping beauty moments they brought us…
The best Met Gala beauty looks of all time
2021: Yara Shahidi
After the Met was put on pause for a year, Yara Shahidi brought her A-game with a look we'll never forget. Her monochromatic burgundy lip and eye were breathtaking but also wearable, providing excellent inspiration for us non-Met-attending folk.
2019: Lady Gaga
Can you believe this was the last Met Gala red carpet we laid eyes on? Gaga sure made it a memorable one though, with metallic lashes that looked like they could slice through butter and a gown that was shed to reveal another, and another.
Rihanna’s breathtakingly beautiful blush look in 2017 was single-handedly responsible for the product’s resurgence. Contouring had been controlling the beauty game, but this divine draping moment brought colour back into our cheeks and our lives, and boy, are we grateful. It was created using Fenty Beauty’s Killawatt Foil – a full year before the product was launched to the world.
You bet we’re allowing ourselves a tie for 2017 – Zendaya deserves it for bringing us this big hair and bold orange lip moment.
There is just something about the charcoal smokey eye and long sleek hair of Beyoncé in 2016 that will always stick out in our minds.
When we think Met Gala, we think Rihanna. So it’s only fitting that the singer gets two spots in our top looks of all time. The flicked-out bob, straight-tailed brows, eyeliner wing and headdress are just as memorable in our books as the yellow gown that launched a thousand memes.
2014: Emma Stone
While Blake Lively’s Hollywood waves deserve their own honourable mention, Emma Stone’s over-the-shoulder braid and rosey makeup is one of our favourite looks ever from the actress.
2013: Miley Cyrus
This was the year things began to truly level up, with the theme ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’ inspiring all celebrities (not just the ‘wild’ ones) to embrace more daring looks. Bleach, mohawks and spikey accessories were plentiful. It was a match made in heaven for the newly reinvented Miley.
2012: Jessica Alba
Many moody lips were worn in 2012. None of whom pulled it off better than Jessica Alba, though.
Oooft the 2011 red carpet was blitzed by J.Lo in head-to-toe red. The slicked-back bun and loaded lashes is a look we’d still wear today. Also, how was this 10 years ago and she looks NO different?!
2010: Doutzen Kroes
Ahhh the year that Sienna Miller and Jude Law were in love and Donald Trump was nowhere near The White House. Kroes crushed it with the OG take on a modern Cinderella, with an old Hollywood glossy wave and cherry lip to boot.
