Blue eyeshadow is going to be summer’s biggest makeup trend
Here’s everything you need to know about wearing accent colours

We’re calling it: Blue eyeshadow is about to become summer’s biggest makeup trend and we couldn’t be happier about it. While we love a good ‘no makeup’ makeup look, a girl has to mix it up on occasion, and a pop of blue is everything we need right now.
Spotted on the New York Fashion Week Spring 2020 runway, and on the lids of pretty much every celeb (Sophie Turner, Lily Collins, Janelle Monáe and Rita Ora all recently rocked this colour on the red carpet), we know a trend when we see one.
The popular colour is fun, bright and undeniably striking, and it just so happens to flatter every skin tone under the sun. The best part? There are a million ways to wear it. Blue eyeshadow is trending in all different shades and finishes – from royal blue to retro mattes and intense electric pigments – so it’s super versatile and anything but boring.
For an easy everyday look, opt for a lighter pastel shade and blend it all over the lid so it looks soft and diffused. If you’re hitting the town and want to step it up a notch, go for a neon blue shade and wear it on the inner corners of your eyes for a playful pop of colour. If a bold eyeshadow look isn’t exactly your thing, you can use your accent blue eyeshadow as liner along your bottom lash line.
Ready to dive in? Check out some of the latest eyeshadow palettes that are all about embracing that blue hue:
Dior 5 Couleurs Lolli’ Glow Limited Edition Palette in 257 Sugar Shade
Is this not just the definition of pretty?! Dior 5 Couleurs Lolli’ Glow Limited Edition Palette in 257 Sugar Shade looks and feels every bit luxe, and the retro marine blue shade is giving us some serious ‘60s and ‘70s Miami Beach vibes - we can’t get enough of it! It’s absolutely stunning and makes us think of lazy days spent chilling by the poolside in the midst of summer. Wear the pastel blue shade all over your lid and you’ll look straight out of the ‘60s. Wear the pastel blue shade all over your lid, making sure you blend out the edges for that dusky, watercolour effect.
Revlon ColorStay Looks Book Eye Shadow Palette in Player
The Revlon ColorStay Looks Book Eye Shadow Palette in Player offers a whole heap of potential colour combinations, but we think a mix of the two blue accent shades creates the most stunning retro makeup look. The key? Don’t make it look perfect – you just have to go for it! Think Rodarte’s Picasso-inspired 2020 Spring runway look.
Rimmel London Magnif’Eyes Reloaded Edition
Talk about an accent colour! You’ll be hard-pressed to find another shade quite like this one in the Rimmel Magnif’Eyes Reloaded Edition palette. Ditch your usual neutral browns and shake things up with a touch of electric blue shadow on the inner corners of your eyes for a fun, going-out makeup look.
Bobbi Brown Holiday Collection In A Flash Eyeshadow Palette
We could definitely get around all of these stunning colours in the Bobbi Brown Holiday Collection In A Flash Eyeshadow Palette, but it’s the shimmery Steel Thunder Chrome Metal (a duo-chrome blue/purple metal) and the Electric Blue Chrome Metal (a smoky blue metal) that have really caught our eye – they’re totally lust-worthy! Layer and blend these two shades for a cool, multidimensional look.
Maybelline New York City Mini Eyeshadow Palette in Graffiti Pop
Now THIS is an accent colour! Maybelline City Mini Eyeshadow Palette in Graffiti Pop features a striking shimmery aquamarine shade that is so pigmented it almost doesn’t look real. Amplify your usual makeup look and apply the bright shade along your lower lash line for a fresh, modern take on the trend.
Yves Saint Laurent Couture Variation Palette in 02 Tuxedo
Yves Saint Laurent Couture Variation Palette in 02 Tuxedo is the perfect palette for when you want to add a hint of drama to your eye makeup look. To create a dark smoky eye, apply the deep navy-blue shade over your entire lid, before using the metallic grey in the outer corner of your eye (make sure you blend, blend, blend!) to achieve a sultry, defined look. Perfect for date night!
Morphe x James Charles - The James Charles Palette
You’ll be spoilt for choice with this mammoth offering from Morphe x James Charles - The James Charles Palette. It’s probably the most vivid, versatile and pigmented palette getting around. To get on board the blue eyeshadow trend, mix the bright teal shade with a touch of dark cobalt hue in the crease to accentuate your eyes.
