Just when we thought we were finally getting our life together – beauty routine and all – 2021 decided to throw a major spanner in the works and we’d be lying if we said we weren’t taking it personally. All jokes aside, for those of us who love nothing more than a luxe facial after a long week of work or live for the all-over bronze of grade-A spray tan, it’s fair to say we’re feeling a little lost amongst the chaos of COVID-19.
While we can’t visit our go-to beauticians during this time, it doesn’t mean we have to miss out on the opportunity to unwind and indulge in our favourite treatments. Luckily for us, we can basically replicate all of our beauty treatments at home – which means we can still get our desperate fix of R&R while practicing social distancing.
BABOR’s National Trainer, Shelley Petersen says that it’s just as important to look after your health, wellbeing and general state of mind as it is to ensure you’re keeping up with your regular treatments.
“When we are stressed our body releases cortisol, which interferes with the skins natural functions and reflects in a compromised complexion. Try to remain calm and combat stress-related skin concerns (breakouts, oiliness, dryness and redness) with targeted products,” says Petersen.
As far as our skin care routine goes, Petersen says that we need to be mindful to maintain the level of discipline we would in our normal day-to-day, as “it’s easy to become complacent with our skin health routines when we are at-home, skipping important steps, not drinking enough water and snacking on unhealthy treats.”
Our new work-from-home setup is also the perfect opportunity to utilise the climbing number of masks we have tucked away in our beauty cupboard. “Staying indoors and at-home is the perfect time to use masks to enhance your beauty routine,” says Petersen. “Try supercharging the effects of your mask by applying a serum underneath. This is a great beauty boost whilst working from home or binging on your favourite Netflix show.”
Now that we’re equipped with these expert-guided tips, it’s time to hunker down and put the wheels into motion. Below, we’ve rounded up seven of the best at-home beauty treatments to keep you looking fresh throughout lockdown.
Sisley Self-Tanning Hydrating Facial & Body Skin Care
As we slowly transition into the new season, it’s no secret that most of us would normally be scheduling in regular fake tanning appointments. While that’s no longer an option, French skin care and cosmetics house Sisley is here to save us with Sisley Hydrating Body Self Tan ($165 at Sisley) and Sisley Self Tanning Hydrating Facial Skin Care ($180 at Sisley). Not only does this product glide on easily and blend evenly into the skin, it’s also extremely hydrating so your skin will always look luminous and glowy!
Olay Daily Facial Dry Cloths
If there’s one major change we’re making to our beauty routine now that we’re WFH, fitting in that essential daily double-cleanse is one of them – especially now that our facialist isn’t there to save us. Thankfully, this 5-in-1 game-changing product from Olay is about to make this step so much simpler. Olay Daily Facial Cleansing Cloths have been designed to be able to be used anywhere, anytime; there's Olay Daily Facial Wipes Sensitive ($15 at Woolworths), Olay Daily Facial Wipes Hydrating ($15 at Woolworths) and Olay Daily Facial Wipes Purifying ($15 at Woolworths) For those of us constantly stuck to our computers, it’s worth keeping the wipes on your desk for a midday skin refresh. They work as a makeup remover, scrub, toner, mask and cleanser - the whole shebang!
Bangn Body Smooth Skin Scrub
Now that we can’t treat ourselves to an ultra-Zen spa date, it’s time to get creative and transform our bathrooms into day spas! The best place to start? With a nourishing, deep-cleansing body-exfoliant, of course. While there are several options on the market to choose from, we can’t go past this Bangn Body Smooth Skin Scrub ($42 at Mecca) that helps combat dry, bumpy and dull skin in minutes by removing dead skin cells while hydrating the skin. Delicious!
Davines OI Hair Butter
Global pandemic or not, Davines’ OI Hair Butter ($49.95 at OZ Hair & Beauty) should be a staple on every beauty shelf all year round. Now especially when many of us are going without our usual salon treatments, this rich, buttery product deeply nourishes and moisturises the hair to combat frizz and bring intense softness and shine.
Dr Dennis Gross Skin Care Spectralite Faceware Pro
Make like many a celebrity and bring your favourite light therapy into the home with the cult-favourite Dr. Dennis Gross
Spectralite Faceware Pro ($619 at Mecca). This LED mask is packed with a whopping 100 red LED lights and 62 blue LED lights, aims to bring together the wrinkle-busting and spot-fading properties of red light therapy and bacteria-eliminating properties of blue light therapy, all in the comfort of your own home.
Grown Alchemist Deep Cleansing Facial Masque
There’s never been a better time to make a mask your best friend. Recreate the benefits of your favourite clinic treatment by giving your skin the deep cleanse it deserves – and so desperately needs! Grown Alchemist Deep Cleansing Facial Masque ($40 at Adore Beauty) does just that, detoxifying the skins appearance to leave it looking visibly revitalised, decongested, smooth and toned. You can supercharge the effects of your mask by layering your favourite serum underneath.
Dior Capture Totale Super Potent Serum
This extra (and unexpected) time at home means that naturally, we’ve all become victim to spending a little more time in front of our screens. While it should come as no surprise, these lifestyle habits can have a significant effect on the ageing of our skin. Introducing Dior Capture Totale Super Potent Serum ($145 at Myer); an anti-ageing product that corrects dark spots, reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and brings back your skin’s youthful glow with a formula that’s powered by 91 per cent natural-origin ingredients. Just the product we need!
