Our noses are ready

If you’ve ever dabbled in the world of luxury candles, then you’ve probably come across one of Byredo’s heavenly olfactory concoctions. The Scandinavian fragrance brand is renowned for creating future-focused scents that stand the test of time and provide a unique perspective on personal and home fragrance.

Recently, the brand’s founder Ben Gorham lent his nose to a limited edition home fragrance line with everybody’s favourite Swedish furniture store, IKEA. The range is called OSYNLIG (the Swedish word for ‘Invisible’) and when describing the collaboration, Gorham said, “smell is a very relevant part of the home, and it creates a sense of comfort and security. We’re trying to develop a range of smells enforcing the idea that everyone has a different relationship to it, and nothing is right or wrong.”

OSYNLIG was creatively led by James Futcher at IKEA; who explained that the concept of invisible design evolved from the idea that, “layer on top of functionality completes the home, the intangible things like lighting, mood, and atmosphere enable you to have a really emotive, interesting environment.”

The handmade ceramic pots that house each of the 14 signature scents feature a range of earthy-toned glazes in an array of sizes that speak to a palette of natural origins. In the words of IKEA designer Iina Vuorivirta, “something as non-physical as a fragrance needs a tactile context.”

The initial release of the home fragrance collab will be hitting stores and ikea.com on November 1st and will feature the scents; Tea Leaves & Verbena, Pomegranate & Amber, Basil & Mint, Fig & Cypress, Peach Blossom & Bamboo, Lilac & Amber, Rose & Raspberries, Cotton Flower & Apple Blossom, Sandalwood & Vanilla, and Tobacco & Honey, while Cassis & Freesia, Swedish Birch & Juniper, and Firewood & Spice will be available from February 2021 with prices ranging from AUD$7 to AUD$35.

Byredo doesn’t just create fragrance - they’re expanding into makeup.
