Plus, she reveals her new Holy Grail mascara

Beauty Crew Beauty Writer / April 08 2020

Jules Sebastian sure knows how to keep herself busy. The TV presenter, stylist, makeup artist and mum of two (Jules and husband Guy Sebastian have two boys – Hudson and Archer) has just been announced as the new ambassador for Biolage professional haircare. And did we mention she’s also writing a book? So casual. We managed to pin down Jules to talk clean beauty, haircare and why it’s so important to invest your skin.

On why clean beauty is so important…

I think about it in three different ways: what you put into your body, what you put onto your body and then what you get out of your body. So, exercise is the stuff that gets all your sweat and toxins out, then obviously what you put into your body is water, good foods and nutrients, and what you put onto your body is just part of that whole wellbeing and lifestyle. Over the years I’ve learnt that you do have to read the packaging [on your beauty products] and you do need to know what ingredients you’re putting on your body, because that’s huge. It’s important to be asking these questions [surrounding clean beauty], because at the end of the day, it’s your body.

On her new role as ambassador for Biolage…

I’ve always been in the world of beauty, so I think of it as a part of my job, particularly with working in the fashion industry. I think it all goes hand-in-hand, and I’ve always been working among makeup artists and hairstylists. I’ve also always been a big fan of L’Oréal – they have beautiful products. So, when they approached me, I was like, “Absolutely!”. I love how they’re really concentrating on natural ingredients and how their packaging is recyclable. I think it’s great to feel like you’re doing something good for the environment, while doing something good for yourself as well – because who’s got time to think about all those things separately!

On her everyday haircare routine…

My hair is quite fine and straight and - I know it may sound obvious - but using hair products is so important in order to tame your hair and get what you want it to do. If I leave it, then my hair is just the flattest thing ever. I wash my hair every single day (I know that’s every hairdresser’s nightmare, but I have to!) and I like to use the Matrix Biolage ColorLast Shampoo and Conditioner. This range is made with orchid, which is known for its colour-staying benefits, so it’s perfect for my hair. For a regular everyday situation, I love my hair to have a bit of volume and grit, so I like to use the Biolage VolumeBloom Full-Lift Volumising Spray. I don’t like to have super-flat, straight hair all the time. So, I spritz this in, blow-dry my hair and I’m done. That’s just a normal school run/working from home look. Sometimes I’ll use the amazing Biolage All-In-One Coconut Conditioning Spray before adding in the volumising spray, because this is just super nourishing and restores and repairs your hair. I like my routine to be fast and simple!

On what her skin care routine involves…

Over the years I’ve become a lot more aware of taking good care of my skin. I remember years ago I was in an interview and someone asked me where I go for facials, and I remember thinking, I hardly ever go for facials! And then I got one one day (I go to Pellis MediSpa on Clovelly Road [in Randwick, Sydney] – she’s a wizard!) and that’s when I really started investing in my skin. It’s the first thing people see, after all. I want to try and hang on to the natural process for as long as I can. Eating well, drinking lots of water and exercising is just so important for healthy-looking skin – it’s boring but it’s necessary. All-in-all, I also have a really good skin care routine in place – cleansing, using serums and a good moisturiser. I like to use skin care products from Rationale.

On her favourite makeup products…

I have been on the hunt for a good mascara for many months because M.A.C discontinued the Zoom Lash Mascara, and I seriously thought my life might be over – it has been the mascara I’ve literally used my whole life. So, I’ve been trying so many different ones to find my new go-to. And I have to say, I’m really loving MCoBeauty XTend Lash at the moment – it’s amazing!

On her top makeup tip...

I have so much makeup – you pick so many things up along the way, and a lot of it you don’t end up using all the time. So, I have an everyday makeup bag with my essentials – like my foundation, eyeliner, blush, eyebrow pencil and mascara. If I’m in a major hurry I can just bring that all with me and do it in the car. It just makes life so much easier, having it all in the one spot.

On her major beauty regrets…

Mostly my hair! I got my hair cut into a really short pixie haircut and I just wanted it all back, immediately. It just did not suit me – it looked so bad! It was so short, I couldn’t do anything with it and just had to wait for it to grow out.

On what’s next career-wise…

I’m in the middle of writing a book! And it will touch on so many different things. We’re obviously going onto the next series of Tea With Jules [her YouTube show], which has been such a game-changer for me. I’ve spoken with so many people over the years, including people from the beauty industry, people who I’m interested in, people who I’ve always wanted to know, and I’ve received so many different pearls of wisdom from every guest. So, with my new book, I’m bringing all of this together and talking about how their life lessons and experiences have collided with my own. It’s kind of like a big story book on my life and their lives, and I’ve just mushed it all together. It’s really exciting, scary and a lot of hard work. But for me it’s really satisfying, and I cannot wait to say it’s finished and just put it out into the world. It’s a really big one, along with Tea With Jules – which is my little side kick. Obviously working alongside Biolage is my next big 2020 project, and it’s so exciting. There’s so many fun adventures coming up!
