The secret to Karen Sirko's Brigitte Bardot-inspired '70s blowout

With wisdom straight from Daisy Jones & The Six's Hair Department Head

Daisy Jones & The Six's Karen Sirko may be the queen of the keys (and Graham Dunne’s heart; BRB crying), but ever since Suki Waterhouse's first pics in character dropped, it became clear that she also happens to have one of the greatest heads of hair in the (hypothetical) biz.

'70s hair was always bound to be great, but Waterhouse with a larger-than-life retro blowout? Epic. So while our Karen-inspired piano practice is still at ‘beginner’ level, we’re determined to make bigger strides in the ‘70s styling stakes.

We went straight to the source to find out exactly how to replicate Karen’s signature style. Yep, BEAUTYcrew spoke to Daisy Jones & The Six Hair Department Head MaryAnn Jennings and we got all the intel…

The inspiration behind Karen Sirko's hair

“My inspiration for Karen was Brigitte Bardot. [Her vibe is] curtain bangs, big hot rollers, and [heavily] teased hair with an ‘I don’t give a crap’ sexy look," Hennings shares, also breaking down the transformation Karen's hair sees throughout the series.

“Karen was a young female in an unsuccessful band when talked into joining Billy and Graham's band [but] she was cool from day on,” she explains. But while the cool-factor stayed consistent, her aesthetic goes from DIY to professionally done as the band's fame grows. “Her look went from a girl that went from styling her own hair into a rock star," Hennings confirms.

How to get Suki Waterhouse's 'Karen Sirko' hair

Here's how Hennings locked in Karen's look on the set. “Karen’s hair required a lot of anti-humidity [prep] and products for volume to keep it from going flat,” she notes, sharing her five-part prep routine for building height and enhancing longevity.

“I used Lolavie [Glossing] Detangler ($26 at
Lola Vie) and Perfecting Leave-In ($29 at Lola Vie) followed by Living Proof Anti Humidity ($40 at MECCA) [and] Bumble and Bumble [Surf] Spray ($50 at MECCA) for [Karen's] everyday look."

“For performance hair [I prepped with] IGK [No Limit Dry] Volume [And Thickening Spray] ($44 at Sephora), 1970s hot rollers and plain rollers. Her look [often] fell during shooting performances, so I was always on set with my Dyson Air[Wrap Multi-Styler] wand ($849 at Dyson) and Dyson [Supersonic] Hair Dryer ($549 at Dyson) to quickly bring her back to match the scene.”

Hennings didn't drop the identity of her specific roller sets, but the VS Sassoon Classic Salon Setter Heated Rollers ($49.95 at Harvey Norman) and URCHUZE 24 Pcs Hair Rollers ($15.99 at Amazon) will definitely deliver a solid '70s vibe.
