Lauren Conrad and James Charles just addressed their beauty beef

But, boy, did it start out rocky...

Digital Beauty Editor / November 16 2020

Anyone who grew up watching The Hills on repeat (ahem, definitely us), knows very well the massive impact Lauren Conrad (and her single mascara tear) had on the beauty world. So, when she announced she was launching her very own makeup line, our response was something along the lines of "it's about damn time".

It seems as if not everyone in the industry was as thrilled about the news as we were, though... in fact, beauty vlogger James Charles seems to be making a habit out of coming for anyone who dares to start a makeup line. ICYMI, he had a few choice words for Alicia Keys' announcement, as well.

Taking to Instagram stories to share his disappointment over the empty samples he received (more on those in a minute), Charles went as far as to say Conrad had "no business having a makeup brand" while pleading with celebs to stop launching them in general. To that we say, let's not forget that LC's glossy lips ran so that all of ours could walk.... a little respect for the queen of winged liner, please.

Conrad, classy as ever, cleared the air via her own Instagram: “For those asking about the empty components sent to James… let me tell you a funny story,” she wrote.

“The woman who put together the gifts (it was me) decided to fill a makeup bag full of empty samples to make sure everything would fit inside. When beauty products arrived and it was time to fill all the makeup bags she (again, me) accidentally included the bag full of empties with the others and it was sent out. She will be let go immediately," she joked.

Charles had evidently calmed down a few hours later, taking to stories once more to explain that he and Conrad had delved into their personal DMs to sort the issue.

“Wanted to write an apology to @LaurenConrad for my stories earlier,” he shared. “I’ve been on the verge of tears all day long from a ton of things going wrong & opening her PR package was the icing on the cake of weird things happening today. My stories talking about the products were supposed to be funny but they just came across as nasty because I was so upset, not with her, but with other things that happened today. Lauren and I spoke privately about the misunderstanding & are both good."

However, the two recently reunited (much to Conrad's surpise) when NikkieTutorials, whom Conrad was filming a 'get ready with me' video with, decided to loop Charles into the video chat. It certainly seemed like the relationship was still rocky at first, considering Conrad appeared to log off the second he arrived. "Not a sister scandal! Not this again!", Charles joked as she disappeared. Definitely awkward.

It turns out it was a classic case of technological difficulties as she returned moments later after switching to her phone. Nothing more relatable than when your laptop battery runs out the second the vlogger you're beef-ing with joins the call, right? The story does check out, though; as she dropped off the call, Conrad turned to her camera operator in shock, telling him "Oh my god! My computer just turned off! I'm dead!"

Charles reiterated his admiration for Conrad's understanding once they were all reconnected: "Lauren handled it like the absolute professional she is. We talked via DM, and I'm just really grateful that she was so kind and understanding. We talked, and she sent me a new package of not empty products, and I was super excited to try them out. They were phenomenal, and it's all good to go."

Conrad also went on to recall the moment she realised the mishap was being aired online. "I [was] in the front yard playing with my kids, and I looked and saw I had all these messages on my phone. I was like, 'what's going on?'. Because it [was] the end of the workday. I looked at this text and I was like, 'wait, what happened? How did this happen'?"

But we know what you're still thinking: how on earth did Charles ever manage to look past Conrad's influence in the first place?! NikkieTutorials certainly didn't, billing her as the very reason she got into makeup in the first place. Charles, however, says he missed the boat. "The Hills came before my time. I was literally a tiny little kid when it came out."

"James, you sent me a video and said, 'I was 0 years old!'. I was like 'how old does he think I am?!'," Conrad laughed. For those playing at home (or trying to do the math in their heads right now), Charles would have been seven when the show premiered.

And while we maintain that it was essential viewing for any age group, we're just glad these two have ironed things out. We pray that no single mascara tears were cried over this issue... but as we all know, Conrad may forgive you, but she may also want to forget you.
