With the biggest Australian horse racing events like Derby Day, Oaks Day and Melbourne Cup on the horizon, it’s time to start locking in outfits, headpieces and even scheduling beauty appointments in the lead up to your trackside appearance. As for your makeup on the actual day? Your number one goal is a look that lasts. Whether you’re planning on getting your makeup done professionally or doing it yourself, it’s likely that you’ll run into some makeup-related issues, such as your base moving, eyeshadow not staying in place or your lippie not looking as nice as it did when you left the house. Here are 10 makeup products that can help your look last the distance.
Problem: Your foundation looks patchy come midday
Solution: Yves Saint Laurent Top Secrets Instant Moisture Glow is a mattifying primer that you can use under foundation to boost its longevity. Try layering under a long-wearing foundation, such as Yves Saint Laurent Beauté All Hours Foundation, for a base that can last up to 24 hours.
Problem: Your lipstick feathers during the day
Solution: Estée Lauder Pure Color Love Lipstick features a flat chiseled tip that doubles as a lip liner - it’s a two-in-one product we can’t stop using. A special shout out goes to the shade Wild Poppy, which will add a splash of colour to any outfit.
Problem: Your eyeshadow won’t stay on your eyelids
Solution: As powdered eyeshadow is more likely to move on your eyelids, you’re better off using a liquid or mousse eyeshadow for a finish that will stay in place all day. Revlon ColorStay Eye Shadow lasts up to 24 hours on skin without moving, and comes in a range of shades that suit every skin tone. Our favourites are Honey, Earl Grey and Cherry Blossom.
Problem: Your T-zone gets oily
Solution: Blotting papers, like Tatcha Aburatorigami Blotting Papers, can soak up excess oil in an instant, and won’t affect your foundation application underneath. What makes these special is the fine paper quality that’s made with tiny gold flakes, which adds a touch of glamour to what is normally a mundane task. If you’re not a fan of papers, Mecca Max Press Refresh Anti-Shine Balm also does the trick.
Problem: Your base feels too heavy when you layer a sunscreen under your foundation
Solution: If a glowing complexion is what you’re after, try CHANEL Les Beiges Healthy Glow Gel Touch Foundation. It’s infused with hyaluronic acid to provide lots of hydration through the day and feels cooling to wear, and it has SPF 25 to protect skin.
Problem: Your foundation looks cakey
Solution: We’ve turned to stick foundations this racing season as they’re so versatile and easy to use. Our pick is Tarte’s Clay Stick Foundation that is not only mattifying, but it can also be layered and built up to a full coverage that doesn’t look too heavy. Swipe this mattifying formula straight onto skin, or pack it in your purse for when you need to touch up areas that require special attention, such as around your nose and mouth.
Problem: Your bold lipstick cracks through the day
Solution: L’Oréal Paris Infallible Matte Lip Paint offers a bold slick of colour that feels lightweight to wear. If you’re a fan of hot pink then you’ll be a fan of the shade King Pink. “[This is] a perfect option for someone [who] wants a pigmented, long-lasting lipstick without it drying out your lips,” says Camille, one of our Review Crew® members.
